“One of the dangerous things for artists is to get caught in a trap that you need be completely upset and miserable and depressed in order to create art. And it took me a really long time to realize that I didn’t need all that to create art.”

Now this has me wondering, "Which is more important, the art or the artist?"

Art is used as escapism for many, millions of people put words into paper with the purpose of reaching out for a breath of fresh air while constantly drowning in water made of void. I feel that we forget there are also those enamored with the world around them, and they want to share it. So they write poems, and they make paintings, and they play music. Art is the exaggeration of emotion, but it’s easy to forget that positive feelings can be exploited and felt as much as negative ones can.

As an artist myself, I do feel some sense of seriousness to the "Tortured Artist" stereotype. My art is usually very emotional, and I feel I create best when I feel passionately. Weather it's about what I'm creating or not, I do my best work when I'm feeling particularly strong emotions. Depression can sometimes be one of those emotions, as backwards as that sounds. When I'm depressed, I usually try to draw things that make me feel happy or at peace. Or if I'm really far down, I create dark and disturbing things. It is not something I need to be able to draw, but passion, weather love or hate, is a particularly strong fuel.

For most people disorders are actually ruin the quality of their art and their productivity. When I'm anxious or depressed I can't do almost anything. If you explore closely biographies of some "genius" people you'll understand what I mean. They were creative and smart not because of disorders but in spite of them. It's really hard to do those things while sick.

I am a writer. I started writing in my high school when i was going through dark time. And somehow, once i found things that made me happy, I realized i couldn't write just as effectively anymore. Even till today, my best writings have come from times when I was too sad or crying or just really just tryna survive that day. Damn. This video hit hard.

I have a bipolar disorder and my depression paralyzed me to the point where I couldn't bear to write anything. It wasn't until I got better that I was able to write again. Some people experience depression and they manage to cope through creativity. But for me, depression killed my creativity.
