Thanks for that detailed explanation of how that shifter works, I know there are automatic transmissions in trucks now but never saw the shifter or knew how they worked. My curious side appreciates that :-) Drive safe!

If one of your gears goes out, can you force it to skip that gear like a manual?

We just got 15 of these peterbilt trucks up here in Boston. Can't say I like it for beer delivery. The shift device feels chintzy when you are jumping in and out of a truck and the adrenaline is pumping to have to be all finesse instead of pushing a button or slamming it into gear to go. I can see it being good for highway driving but we are never asked what is best for us lol.

If you have the depressive break you have most likely a Gen. 3 or newer transmission some Gen 2 and all gen 1 still have a clutch pedal I have a gen 1 and automatic mode for any kind of hills can become a big problem it will try to upshift and blow the and then you have to start over from the beginning

Im used to manual transmission and drove an automatic this week for the first time.
Backing was next to impossible for me. The truck bucked and lurched the whole time in reverse. Seemed to either be stopped or jump to high speed with even the slightest touch of fuel. Couldnt gradually back or feather in and out of movement like a clutch.
Was actually dangerous.
How in the world do you get used to that?
Any tips?

Ok. Só if I want to change the gear while my foot is on accelerater, do I take off my foot and then change the gear or I maintain my foot?

Seems to me that the RNDL selector might get in the way while operating the paddle.

I drive a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia with the paddle shifter as you demonstrate. I pull a belly dump and go in and out of a quarry that has a very steep hill (I would say greater than 10%). I have yet to find the perfect sweet spot to descend that hill with little to no brakes, with max weight. My question is how to descend this hill with no (or very little) brakes and maintaining less than 2200 RPMs. Any takers to explain this for me?

Do you need to apply clutch when driving on automatic and you want to stop and do u use the clutch again when u take off?

I've been looking at buying a 07 Columbia and it looks like it has the same shifter. I'm just nervous about taking off on snow and ice. I can rock my 13 speed if i need to but don't know what i would do with a auto.

Can you downshift while in automatic mode, or do you switch to manual mode and then downshift?
