The leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Romania pledged support for Ukraine to become a candidate to join the European Union after talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to Kyiv intended to show unity in the face of Russia’s invasion. They traveled overnight by train and were accompanied by Romania’s president in a show of solidarity ahead of an expected recommendation Friday from the European Commission that Ukraine be granted candidate status. The discussions sought to soothe strained ties after their governments faced criticism for engaging too closely with Russian President Vladimir Putin and being slow to deliver the heavy weapons needed to defeat his invasion. I do not think that these 4 European leaders have come to Kyiv to show their support. They have come to tell Zelensky the reality and to ask him to face that reality. Of course, Zelensky will just ignore them because his handlers and financiers in Washington tell him to ignore these four clowns.
