Want to learn how to West Coast Swing dance? What should you really focus on when taking a west coast swing lesson? How much does west coast swing footwork really matter anyway?

Once you've learned how to dance west coast swing basic steps, what should you pay attention to most? In this video, Anthony and Rose Lewis of Country Dance X break down a new way of looking at the west coast swing basic steps so that you don't spend too much time worrying about things that ultimately don't even matter in west coast swing dancing.

All west coast swing moves follow either a 6 count or an 8 count structure (no matter how many beats of music it takes). Be sure to watch those how to west coast swing dance videos as they cover many of the concepts discussed in this wcs video in greater detail.

It’s crazy how this structure reminds me of chord progressions in music!!
You start from the tonic (starting point), and then go to the predominant to prep for the drama (follow walks towards the lead), and then go to the dominant (something fancy happens), and then back to tonic (the anchor).
The actual chords being used doesn’t really matter as long as they correspond to the correct function. As long as the functions are correct, anything will sound good!

This is a really smart concept! When I miss a step in West Coast Swing, I panic because I feel like I need to get exactly back 'on track' with my footwork. This shows me that WCS is more forgiving than I thought. Thanks!

Massive lesson for me today. I have always intuitively believed that being in rythm is being in step. And not necessarily that I have to be on the right foot. You've just confirmed it for me. Thank you!

Thank you, Anthony and Rose! My husband and I achieved the impossible last night using your WCS teaching method. We had a whole floor of beginners dancing West Coast Swing after a 1/2 hour lesson. Unbelievable!!

We have been trying to build a WCS community for over 20 years in our small town (Port Townsend, WA) but everyone gave up because it looked too hard and they got too hung up on the footwork. Now, thanks to you, we have a chance! ❤❤❤

Fantastic videos guys. You have the best walk throughs I've seen on Youtube. I used to do a fair bit of Line dancing back in the day (1996-2006) when it was fairly popular down under but it sure has changed now. Not that there ever was many venues other than classes and a few socials down here. We sadly don't have the Bars and Saloons like you have over there but i always liked doing the partner dances when i had someone to dance with. Lucky the ladies were never as shy as i was about getting you up on the floor! That was something i always enjoyed. I did injure my leg and that stopped me dancing for years but things are better now and I'd sure love to get back on the floor with my long time girlfriend i met after giving up line dancing. I'm showing her these videos and she really likes the sort of style this dancing offers. But i need to find a good venue some where in Melbourne (Australia) not Florida! We can go as the country scene has really changed (dissapeared) here, Sadly very few places and the only ones I've seen are a group of older retired people doing basic line But we will keep looking might have to move to Texas!

Awesome as always! Puts my mind at ease when I lose my feet. Also, I thought Rose did an exceptional job! Didn't mess up her lines once! Anthony? Well, he's a work in progress.

I have seen WCS classes where "complication" seems to be the key concept at every WCS class. I gave up trying to develop this dance because of that. (among other reasons) Some classes were very good of course. Your approach to focus on the basics and what is really important is refreshing and with this in mind I hope to make WCS fun again.
So, thank you for another enlightening video. MCDGA!

I'm struggling with the start step and going between East and west coast after a whip.
I began to love WCS when I discovered so much zydeco during Mardi Gras worked so well with WCS.

So what i get out of this video is there are a few different types of footwork involved in west coast swing? Is my assessment accurate, or am i way off?

We’re in our 70s and we’re having a hard time dancing WCS. We just can’t seem to get it. We know ECS but WCS is another matter. Any suggestions?
