How to use Format Painter (with a trick) in Word 365 & 2019

Demonstrates using Format Painter to pick up formatting from one piece of text, and applying that formatting to another piece of text. I just couldn't apply the format painter to multiple word or paragraph even after dobule clicking the button. It just doesn't stays, once apply, it's done. What can I do?

So, how do I format the line styles? Like as if I don't want there to be double spaces btwn each sentence. I'm trying fix a document sent to me from a friend and haven't used Word for some time.
