This is a brief talk about the tree disease Ganoderma. It is a pretty serious disease to have in the urban environment because the tree can possibly fail at the base. It's always best to avoid the conditions that encourage the development of this particular disease but it's very good to be able to recognize.

I have a young foxtail palm in Sw Florida and the base is caving in & hallowing, but i dont see any conks on it.. I hear there is no treatment, but if I cut it down, do I treat soil with fungicide?

Do all trees that show signs of ganoderma need to be cut down?

How can you tell that there's a fungal disease in its beginning stages? Is there ever a way to alkalize the soil (or make it more acidic) to help it out? All the other problems seem to be a result of one underlying thing that weakened the poor tree's "immune system", right? Sorry for all the questions!

So Ganoderma is the dark chunky part at the bottom of an unhealthy tree? This is super interesting!

I'm working on a garden and next to house I've noticed ganoderma applanatum growing on base of a cherry tree, it's got two conks, I don't no how long it's got the leaves look pretty healthy ATM but I'd say the base looks pretty cankered
