W-Urban Legends or Worm Bin Urban Legends are myths or rules about
worm farming that are not true! Come watch as I bust some common myths about worm bins as I feed my worms some forbidden food scraps and shredded cardboard which they turn into natural fertilizer & soil amendments for my garden in the form of worm castings!

In this video I also check on the vegan cheese we fed as a top feeding & set up a new feeding zone for my red wigglers & blue worms full of colorful food scraps & some forbidden foods!

As mentioned in the video, here are the channels that have helped to bust these myths:

I had another thought...
You mentioned how coffee cannot be considered grit and that is absolutely right. What AJ said is spot on. The simple formula for grit is:
if it is water soluble - if it breaks down in a worms stomach and doesn't come out in the poop then it's not grit. Eggshells, oyster shells, lime, sand they all come out in tiny pieces in the castings. They are not water soluble. They pass right through. Coffee dissolves in water.
The cheapest grip for those who don't eat eggs nor have access to shells is a sprinkling of sand which is the grit that all the wild worms eat. The tiny pieces of sand and pebbles in the Earth. I will scoop some up from the edge of my driveway. Nothing is cheaper than free 👍

I love how the worms can eat a sheet of newspaper until it is threadbare (is that a thing with newspapers??)! I’m going to have to think of some more w-urban legends! Great word!

On meat, eggs and dairy it's the smell and heat produced by decomposition that is the reason why they suggest not to feed these. You need a large deep bin to keep smell down and space for worms get away from heat.

Hi patrick. This was a *great video* it's really great to see more people jumping on the "it's okay to feed that" train 🚂
You mentioned the pork chop I added to my system.
What you didn't mention is that it was *completely raw* 🥩 which for most people would think would cause a massive odor. Worm bedding is mostly carbon and every air filter and air deodorizer is generally a carbon filter or some sort of carbon filtration method. Carbon absorbs and blocks odor so while that pork chop was in my family room, I never smelled it unless I completely dug it up. Once they ate it the castings smelled as normal as any other castings. Now I can't afford to feed my worms a raw T-Bone daily (or my cell phone for that matter), but they would sure like it 😆

I love how you show the peppers and onions. I'm with you on the onions, small amounts is best. Not only because it does take a long time and can get stinky but onions contain high amounts of sulfur and that can really throw off the pH balance in a bin. Great point on feed based on your bin size and worm population. Undefeeding is always better than overfeeding. If you underfeed the worms will simply reheat their own castings and finish up any overlooked scraps. Overfeeding can result in death of the entire bin when fermentation, ammonia and anaerobic conditions occur from it. On to your next video. Thanks for the shout out, it is much appreciated!

When I started my bin with 500 worms two years ago I also didn't add onions and garlic. Now, with a population of about 4000 to 5000 worms it is not a problem anymore. I have yet to try orange or lemon peels, got some organic citrus fruits some days ago. And for the top feeding I added pulverized peanut shells again, they only last two days before they're gone. :D

I’m a worm farmer and for your knowledge another substitute for grit other than egg shells is some fine sand! Takes very little !!!

Greetings, Patrick, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸

I just uploaded a video that you asked for...the Can-O-Worms!

The myth I would like to see busted is "worms only eat bacteria"
The myth can easily be busted two ways.
1) is with a bright worm chow (corn meal) and dissection.
2) is with pure newspaper, the worms will mouth the paper (moisten it) until they can suck it in, un-bacterialized, dissection backs it up.
I have literally watched a Canadian nightcrawler, mouth a blade of growing grass, break off a piece and suck it in.
The point is worms will eat anything that is small enough to fit in their mouth.
When a person repeats that "worms only eat bacteria" they have not dissected a worm, only parroted a myth.
If you could bust this myth that would be really cool!
Have a great Day!

I think that might have been a clump of vegan cheese! Those worms were loving the carrot juices hehe 😋 Who would have thought raking through leftovers and checking out worms could be so much fun! 😮 Nice to bust some of thoe rumours, the worms will destroy the lot 😊 Variety is the spice of life or so they say!

The cheese was interesting. The only no no for me is processing bananas in a blender. The mash became alcoholic and drove the worms out. Always interesting Patrick.

Very surprised they went through all the vegan cheese so fast. This looks like a great feeding Patrick. Do you ever look in on the next level down on your worm tower? I believe you said you put on the very bottom a tray to inoculate, which I do really like. But there is a tray or two above the inoculation tray. 🪱😁🪱
