i love how the translation for this scene makes it sound like it was a widely known fact that there was a fake Chaos Emerald, and Eggman just wasn't sure which one it was, making Tails's response seem incredibly dumb. if he had said "How did you know it's fake?" or something it still wouldn't have been a smart thing to say, but it would have sounded less dumb out of context

That said, if you play the Hero Story first, it can genuinely be shocking that Eggman has seemingly identified the fake Emerald after Tails said that it's so realistic that not even a machine can tell the difference. Thinking about it for more than a moment, it's not *that* clever what Eggman did. It's known that Eggman has the ability to detect Chaos Emeralds, so if he detects two when the other six are accounted for, he knows something is up.

But where Eggman really shined here was in *not* giving them that moment to think about it. He put the pressure on them immediately, went in with bluster and confidence, and forced them to give a reaction. Even if Tails hadn't said what he did, putting them in a disconcerting situation that got them off guard for just a moment would've given him time to read their reactions.

And he knows Tails is a kid who isn't fully emotionally mature yet and doesn't know how to hide his emotions. Even if Tails had said nothing, Eggman could have just read his face at the moment he makes his declaration. Shock and surprise? He's given it away. Confusion? Well, that *might* be the real Emerald, maybe adjust the plan a little.

Ultimately, Tails's reaction did reveal the difference between them, and how his youth and lack of experience left him vulnerable here. But Eggman had backed him into a corner, and at this point, there was really nothing he could realistically do. Letting him know how badly he had screwed up was just rubbing salt in the wound.

I know this scene is meant to focus on tails' fuckup, but man that sonic line is good. He knows Eggman has almost always been a big time villain, but he says it just to get under his skin. Such calmness and confidence while under immense pressure and the odds stacked against him. It's exactly why I love this character.
