In this short from James Arnold Taylor's Podcast - Clone Wars Conversations, Sam Witwer explains why Mark Hamill’s specific portrayal of Luke Skywalker is the heart of Great Star Wars.

Truly fantastic hearing Sam explain Mark Hamill's portrayal this way - but do you agree, is he the greatest character in the franchise?

Full credit to James Arnold Taylor and his awesome podcast - link below:

Synopsis of Star Wars (courtesy of Wikipedia):

The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" across multiple fictional eras, in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with droids, which may be programmed for personal assistance or battle. Space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The planets range from wealthy, planet-wide cities to deserts scarcely populated by primitive tribes. Virtually any Earth biome, along with many fictional ones, has its counterpart as a Star Wars planet which, in most cases, teem with sentient and non-sentient alien life. The franchise also makes use of other astronomical objects such as asteroid fields and nebulae. Spacecraft range from small starfighters to large capital ships, such as the Star Destroyers, as well as space stations such as the moon-sized Death Stars. Telecommunication includes two-way audio and audiovisual screens, holographic projections, and hyperspace transmission.

The universe of Star Wars is generally similar to the real universe but its laws of physics are less strict allowing for more imaginative stories. One result of that is a mystical power known as the Force which is described in the original film as "an energy field created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together". The field is depicted as a kind of pantheistic god. Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" exhibit various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, and manipulation of physical energy). It is believed nothing is impossible for the Force. The mentioned powers are wielded by two major knightly orders at conflict with each other: the Jedi, peacekeepers of the Galactic Republic who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration, and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression. While Jedi Knights can be numerous, the Dark Lords of the Sith (or 'Darths') are intended to be limited to two: a master and their apprentice.

The franchise is set against a backdrop of galactic conflict involving republics and empires, such as the evil Galactic Empire. The Jedi and Sith prefer the use of a weapon called the lightsaber, a blade of plasma that can cut through virtually any surface and deflect energy bolts. The rest of the population, as well as renegades and soldiers, use plasma-powered blaster firearms. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, crime syndicates such as the Hutt cartel are dominant. Bounty hunters are often employed by both gangsters and governments, while illicit activities include smuggling and slavery.

The combination of science fiction and fantasy elements makes Star Wars a very universal franchise, capable of telling stories of various genres.

Am I the only one loving the fact that he's wearing a black Mesa t-shirt?

It's called character development. Which is unfortunately lacking in many films today.

One amazing thing is despite Luke having really grown in Jedi, you get little glimmers of his personality. Almost like he can’t help but hide it at times. It’s a great performance. “You can take the kid out of the desert…”

Everytime Sam Witwer speaks his mind about Star Wars it makes me feel like he should be among the ones making new stories or being in the story group or starring in a new movie or tv series.... Such a goldmine of depth, understanding and passion for Star Wars! ❤

Then, despite Hamill very clearly saying “this is not Luke, this is not what Luke would do” Ryan Johnson and Disney proceeded to move forward and perform the biggest character assassination they could

How about we fire Kathleen Kennedy and put this man in charge of Star Wars!

His amazing interaction with a little green muppet also breathed so much believability into the character of Yoda. There of course was so much love and creativity put into making and voicing Yoda, but we saw him through Mark's eyes and that lump of synthetics truly became a living breathing creature.

Luke was the personification of Hope in Star Wars, without Luke, Star Wars has no Hope, no purity of purpose, no path forward, thats what Disney did to Star Wars....they killed hope....and for what? The very things Luke resisted, Greed, jealousy, anger, despair, he even refused to kill when he had a choice, throwing his weapon, the symbol of a Jedi, and the very thing that Vader told him was the completion of his training, away as a rejection of Sidious Influence. Even the Dsrk Lord of the Sith, the antithesis of a Jedi and all they were supposed to stand for, called him a Jedi in that moment, Yoda didnt, Obiwan didnt, but Sidious did, and now, hope has died, and that Galaxy far far away is dimming as the fire dies, because the last thing we have when all else fails, is hope, and they took that from us, from Star Wars.

Disney failed Star wars, plain and simple

You can have 5 or more different Batman’s, but you could never re-cast Luke Skywalker with anyone other than Mark Hamill.

It is the archetypal heroes journey as it is clearly explained in Joseph Campbell’s Hero with 1000 faces. That’s what makes the story universal.

This is why new hope is my favorite. Without the first one you don't have the rest.

I genuinely feel like people get so lost in the conversation of all the incredible lore in the clone wars, games, and prequels (myslrt included!) that they almost forget about just how incredible and important thosr original three films are. The amount of emphasis they put on, not so much winning a war, but doing the right thing, though it's been done before, is so wholesome

My favorite line in the whole series is when Luke is talking to R2 on his way to Dagobah in Empire, amd he says something like "the others will be OK, they have C3PO with them." The way he says it, it's like he still sees himself as the boy with the droids, so he's still doing what makes him useful to them, even though he's absent.
