Would have been cool if you talked about the dimentions of the image as well, considering retina screens and do dimensions v.s. compressions reduction with the same perceived quality by the user.

No shit you can't tell the difference when viewing a video on YouTube. But at 60% there is a visible difference in quality. Beyond that this kind of ignores the challenge of image dimensions on responsive designs, as well as finding the best suited method for different types of images

We're looking at an option in Akamai to do this based on the user's connection speed, which less for our content team to worry about.
