Good explanation of why the differences (Gnome2 and Gnome3 history)
At 69 I want a "familiar" desktop XP-like.  Clean and tight. So MATE suits me better but I also understand why younger generation want a different UI.  Good there is a choice

As a newbie to Linux ... the YouTube comparison Linux Mint 14 - Mate vs Cinnamon ... has also helped me with my choice.

Possibly ...  >55 would chose MATE

Origonally I prerfered the KDE gui, then I switched to Gnome 2, Now while I appreciate both mate and cinnamon gui's, I actually like xfce, lxde. or openbox interface due to my outdated hardware. I would definately go with Cinnamon if my limited resources would function with the same speed. Your comparison of Mate and Cinnamon was spot on. Thanks for the info.

When I review GUI of a desktop OS I always test switching among open windows with Alt-Tab keyboard shortcut, which is important for users who often switch windows (e.g. while working with many open documents).

I'd say that Cinnamon (on Linux Mint 16) has the best windows Alt-Tab switching when compared to MATE (on Linux Mint 16), Unity (on Ubuntu 13.10), GNOME 3 (on Fedora 20) and KDE Plasma (on Kubuntu 13.10).

I am currently running Mint 11 LXDE on my Dell Latitude D505 and Linux Mint 13 on my Dell Optiplex 210L. I am about to install Linux Mint 14 on the 210L and I think I will use Cinnamon. On the Latitude, since it is becoming dated, I am leaning toward Puppy Linux Wary because its CPU is no PAE.

The second he opened Cinnamon menu (he thinks is more "modern" but to me is just horrible) I had no doubt is good I sticked with Mate for so long. Thanks. :-)
