ZZ Top - Just Got Paid (From 'Double Down Live - 1980')

Double Down Live is a 2 DVD set from ZZ Top combining shows from 1980 and 2008. Disc one was filmed at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany for the Rockpalast TV series. Hot on the heels of their classic Deguello album (it features 9 of the 10 songs from it) the show finds ZZ Top before sequencers and synthesizers epitomising their lil ol blues band from Texas nickname. Complimented by tracks drawn predominantly from their Tres Hombres and Fandango! albums this is a true best of ZZ Top in the seventies. Disc Two was shot during their European tour in 2008 and combines great live performances, interview clips and back stage footage to create the ultimate ZZ Top on the road movie. With nearly 30 years between the performances the two disc set gives a fascinating then and now insight into what has maintained the ZZ Top live phenomenon.

I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
Said, I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
If you believe like workin' hard all day,
Just step in my shoes and take my pay.

I was born my papa's son,
When I hit the ground I was on the run.
I had one glad hand and the other behind.
You can have yours, just give me mine.
When the hound dog barkin' in the black of the night,
Stick my hand in my pocket, everything's all right.

I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
Said, black sheep, black, do you got some wool?
Yes, I do, man, my bag is full.
It's the root of evil and you know the rest
But it's way ahead of what's second best.

That fucking classic ZZ Top pre-synthesizer tone is unbeatable, a straight groove from beginning to end on every song

Imagine being as good on the bass as Billy is on lead.

That's Dusty.

Beard's drumming sure makes some of the ZZ songs. A very underrated drummer, IMHO.

If I could go back and see one band at their peak it'd probably be ZZ Top in the late 70s. These guys just crushed live shows in such a unique way. Some of the crunchiest rock I've ever heard.

Saw these guys 5 or 6 times over the years, and they never disappointed. No "no shows", no equipment fuckups, never anything more than professional and awesome every show. RIP Dusty, we'll miss you buddy.

I have seen this band 4 times, including this tour here. Without question the most professional band/musicians. Always show up sober. Always play at their top notch best. Always put on just the right amount of showmanship. They just nail it!!

This is my favorite ZZ Top song of all time and this is probably the best performance of it I've ever seen. All three of these guys make it look easy.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone look as comfortable and effortless as Frank Beard playing the hell out of some drums.
