How to install DHCP and DNS on your Raspberry Pi (or other Linux Distros ) and use Python to monitor
Welcome back to my Python videos this
video we're going to install DHCP and
DNS on a Raspberry Pi. Once we get that
up and running we're going to look at
two key scripts, one is for the DHCP
which will monitor it to see what new
devices are added and the others for DNS
that will run reports and show you what
devices are going to where. We're going
to install that on this little device called a
Raspberry Pi. This retails for about $30
it's a little mini server. You can also do
this video on any Linux distro so if you
don't want to buy this. I'm not selling
raspberry PI's but just this device is
ideal for this task as these servers
need to be running all the time it's a
fun project with Python and other things
so let's get started
okay so before we can get started let's
take a look at what we're actually doing
here we have a Wi-Fi router would an
address typically I've got one and that
is why currently provides your DNS and
DHCP settings to your devices on your
home LAN
On the network , we are going to add the
Raspberry Pi to that device with an
Ethernet cable and give the Raspberry Pi
and address of dot 10. This means that
when devices connected to your network
after this it will be automatically configured to pull
the information from the Raspberry Pi, as
opposed to pulling it from your router.
There are two key things to consider
here first of all you don't need to use
a physical cable to connect the
Raspberry Pi to the router. You can also do
that with Wi-Fi, The second thing is that
the IP address is used here are typical
for home networks yours may be different
if it's 10 dot 0 or 172.16 then you
will need to change that to make this
work and we'll show you how to do that
later in the video
