Black Beauty Ranch: America's Largest Animal Sanctuary

Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch—operated by The Fund for Animals in affiliation with The HSUS—is America's largest and most diverse animal sanctuary. It is a permanent haven to more than 1,200 domestic and exotic animals rescued from research laboratories, roadside zoos, captive hunting operations, factory farms, the exotic pet trade, and other forms of abuse and neglect. It is also home to the innovative Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center.

They look insanely healthy, groomed, and well fed. They look happy and satisfied, and this is how every animal should be. I want to work there someday.

I would love to do something like this in the near future. You can tell these animals are loved. They're all well fed and their coats look clean and fluffy. They deserve every bit of happiness as we do. With so much hate in the world, it's so uplifting to see success stories such as these.

It is always our mission to provide the animals in our care with as close to a natural existence as possible. Fenced enclosures are an unfortuneate requirement for certain captive animals, but we work every day to enrich the lives of the animals in our care. Our ideal scenario is to stop any animal from being taken form the wild or are bred in captivity. Once this occurs they cannot be released back to a wild existence. I hope that helps explain it. I own 3 horses. My mare, i saved her from bad neglect and i freed my pony out of a riding school after 15 years, he worked there. It breaks my heart to see all this neglected horses! My mare still suffers from her old life and this was 6 years ago. I live in Germany and would do everything to get the chance to work with these horses! Keep going with what you're doing!!! Yes, Roo unfortuneatly passed away recently. He was one month shy of his 14th birthday which made him a very old grey kangaroo. We miss him dearly, but are consoled by the fact that we were able to rescue him and give him the gift of a wonderful life for so long. Something very few animals from entertainment shows like Roo was a part of ever get.

Alyssa: I volunteer there and YES they do castrate the males. You're right - it is difficult to "fix" the females as it causes hormone imbalances much as it does in humans. (PS - i feel blessed to be able to help them - it truly is Heaven on Earth - not just for the animals, but for those of us lucky enough to experience it). It's so great knowing they can live out there lives the way they were meant to, not used as food or research victims.

How does one begin a sanctuary? I'm only 16 now, but when I'm older I plan on starting an animal sanctuary here in Canada. I'd love for it to become as big as this one :)

Thank you for the video.  I wish you would spend more time talking about the plight of farm animals.  They deserve to live as free as possible without interference from people too.   In this day and age we don't need animal products at all and can live healthier lives without critters all agree.
