Just heard he passed. Absolutely one of my favourite authors - a giant of literature, intelligent and insightful and a British icon. I'll be re-reading his books and toasting his life. Bon voyage David.

It is truly wonderful when a man of principles and good values is also articulate and eloquent. In many ways, he was too good for today's world.

He knew how to use the wealth his talents brought him. He bought a mile of coast line in southwestern England (along with his house) back in the 1970s. Later he gave half of it away in a trust to be preserved for public use. I've seen photos of the inside of his house. Aside from it being near the ocean you would never know it's owner was quite rich.

1:15 John Le Carré (Patriotism vs Nationalism): "A patriot can criticize his country, stay with it, and go through the democratic process. A nationalist needs enemies."😒

RIP. It's not often you have a writer who can describe something or someone so vividly.

Don’t you go anywhere, Mr. le Carre! You are one of the world’s great authorities on humanism, liberalism and clarity. I think of you during this pandemic and hope you are staying home, working and well.

My favorite author. I'm severely dyslexic but I still have read 19 of his 26 books (many more than once). I even read a biography of him. I'll get around to the last 7 eventually. By far the most believable spy fiction ever. They studied his books at the CIA and KGB- even adapting some of the terminology he coined. One former head of the KGB marveled at how well Le Carre understood the USSR, it's people and intelligence services.

Enjoyed the segment immensely. Every le Carre lately has been outstanding. The recent ones Night Manager and Most Wanted Man were compelling.
