"Protected behind a mask"
Honestly, hearing this makes a whole lot more sense during the prologue. And as you continue in the game, the more of Iron Mask's mask gets revealed, and he even learns his real name. I have yet to beat the game but I love the theme that the same mask goes away, more and more until it completely comes off, like a mystery waiting to be solved but you have to play and wait.
