I read an article in Vogue that recommended using a size 9 needle on leather as it makes very small holes...it works great also used it on heavy vinyl.

I got myself a second hand sewing machine at 53, wanted one for years but didn't have the confidence that i would be able to make anything.. My 1034D serger worked fine on everything but 1 slightly thicker/stretchier workout shirt. Would stitch a couple inches then snap the lower looper. Switched to jersey needles, worked perfectly. Had no idea needles mattered in that way too.
