MANIACAL LAUGHTER is an iconic madness trope. We see Jinx laughing up a storm in totally inappropriate situations. It doesn’t matter if she’s in pain from stapling her injuries or whether Caitlyn is pointing a gun at her. She can be joking around with Silco or accusing Vi of betraying her, and somehow we get the same creepy giggles in every situation. We can expand the question to other iconic mad laughter scenes: How is laughter used in all iterations of the Joker? Why does the Emperor laugh when trying to turn Luke? What exactly IS nervous laughter? What about Kira’s iconic laughter scene in Death Note?

I also noticed that Jinx kinda talks like an old man. "Sevika's a real Johnny-on-the-spot" and "I'm in no mood." Its all very un-teen of her. Maybe it's cause her only friend is Silco?

I think Jinxs giggle when Caitlyn says she's too far gone is actually appropriate despite the situation.
Vi's known Powder as her sister for most of her life. She had to practically raise her as a surrogate mother when their parents died. She knew her sister better than anybody, yet remains in denial that Powder is dead.
Caitlyn is a total stranger to Jinx. They've never had a real conversation or connection. Yet she knows Jinx for what she is.
That's what I think Jinx was laughing at. The irony that someone who doesn't know her at all can see what her own sister can't.

I never though Jinx laugh was happy laughter, I saw her as nervous and sometimes trying to escape reality/trying not to care. I sometimes smile when I am nervous lol

I think she giggled at Caitlyns comment that she is "too far gone" to hide how hurt and insecure she actually is, you can see it in her eyes. Also she does this on multiple occations throughout the entire series.
There is also an interesting detail that no one else seems to have noticed so far: Jinx has visible scars on her right side (most notably a big one on her shoulder) from the explosion on the bridge. She was most likely bleeding out because of those wounds, that is probably the reason why Singed had to pump her full of shimmer in order to save her life.

It’s interesting though, I think this carries more meaning in our perception of like social madness than it does the “mad person” themselves, if you think about the variance behind the clips you showed.

So like in Joker, Arthur has involuntary laughter due to pseudobulbar affect.
In TDK, Joker laughs sadistically as he moves to torture a man to death on camera.
In Arcane, Jinx does it for a variety of reasons, like in one instance where Silco’s scolding she’s like nodding her head anticipating Silco’s acknowledgment of what she did because she’s waiting to surprise him and gain his approval, laughing because she honestly just can’t see anything wrong with what she’d just done. Then there’s that pacifying chuckle when she thinks Vi is lying to her or even just forcing herself to laugh when she’s stapling her leg wound together to cope with the physical pain (hell, try laughing when you’re in pain yourself, it’s just as good as swearing and shouting)

It is very much a social thing we percieve and it is malleable in that sense, like think of people who want their funerals to be like atypically cheerful and celebratory, not because they take their death lightly, but because they want their lives to be celebrated and want people they care about to be happy after they’re gone and stuff.

It’s an interesting topic, what we find “too taboo” to laugh about, what’s inappropriate to find amusing etc. like how on old tv you couldn’t swear and before it became commonplace there was this period where people went from finding the act shocking to finding it FUNNY because it was shocking, now to the point where it’s far less taboo. Hell, even just like the black comedy genre in general!

We’re always pushing that boundary. 50 years ago people would consider us mad for the type of stuff we laugh at these days. I mean meme culture evolves so rapidly that a lot of people find the latest like decade of Gen Z humor mad.

it's a way to mask vulnerability. she's always been insecure of being weak and thinks that showing someone that she's sad or anxious is a sign of weakness, so she laughs to hide it. like in the scene with sevika she started to cry, but pretended to sneeze and just laughed about it

Another function of inappropriate laughter is to give an outlet for stress when the social situation wouldn't allow for weeping. The famous 1963 Stanley Milgram torture experiment had a test subject (ie an average dude) giggling with stress thinking he had electrocuted a third party to death; the man wanted to cry or emote but the social situation didn't allow it, so he picked a less humiliating option to vent his feelings.

I get the same vibe from Jinx. She's trying to prove herself to Vi, Silco and the underworld, and inappropriate giggling helps her deal with the Milo on her back and trauma flashbacks - all without losing face, and keeping up the notoriety of being unpredictable and dangerous. (You're doing great Chuck!!!)

I would like to add: as a Traumatized Person™️ I laugh/smile when I'm I find this in a lot ppl I know who've been through shit. It's different from nervous laughter in that the situation and emotions can be more extreme but I'll laugh anyway because it helps me mask emotions that might've been dangerous to show during a different time in my life, and it helps me downplay myself and any problems I might be having to avoid burdening others.
It's also a method of coping for certain triggers.

Sometimes laughter really shows how painful the character is feeling inside. For example, after Jinx laughed while stitching herself, she lay on her chair and seem to be so tired and sad. She seem to be out of her mind when she laughed, but I believe deep down she is wide awake which is why she could feel the pain and be tortured.

I just realize that after episode 3 jinx uses the mylo's way to use the gun

I think laughter is also a response to intense physical or emotional shock. I recently had a police officer get mad at me for laughing when they asked if I was okay right after being hit by a car. When we got a letter saying my cat died my mom and I couldn’t stop laughing even tho we were genuinely upset.

Fun fact when humans are overwhelmed or overstimulated or just are brains are short circuiting (jinx looking at you) our brains auto laugh to kind of try to reset our emotional state

When animals conclude a stressful scenario, good stress and bad stress alike, they literally shake it off. I’ve wondered for a while if humans laugh it off exactly the same way

At the end of episode 8, does Jayce really see children in Silco's facility or does he only imagine them as children and their future he destroyed? Because if you look closer, some have very adult faces and at the beginning of the raid they hold 3 strong adults at gunpoint.

ok, so not to speak a forbidden name in this household, but Freud (🤮) has a whole book on humour and how we use it as a coping mechanism in response to trauma.
Truth be told, I haven't read it yet, but the entire book is basically about using humour, and the energy created by humour to alleviate the 'negative energy' created by stress and trauma. IIRC the book also talks about what we perceive as funny or humourous being directly related to what upsets us.

_"I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize, it’s a comedy." ~ the funny clown from that one movie_

So, yeah TL;DR according to Freud Jinx's sense of humour comes from her mental unwellness and traumas.

I used to have a nervous laugh as a kid. I remember being scolded by a teacher in primary school, and ofc giggling nervously. I couldn't stop. Sort of coping. Laugh rather then cry. Too bad teacher took it personal and called my mom. Apparently "I was laughing into her face when she told scolded me".

Let me add that mom is also a teacher for young children. She was like bruh you know nothing about kids do you?

And as a fun fact let me add that I was scolded for climbing on the locked window or something. It was in the underground lockroom and I was trying to reach my jacked but it was hanging to high (next to the window) so i simply climbed and got it myself to not trouble anybody but apparently, it was dangerous. This was also gimnastic sport school where kids my age could do much more dangerous things then climbing on staff. This event was just so bazaar...Anyway, story of my life. Misunderstood nervous giggling.

Went insane once cause of depression. My coping mechanism went from painful memory = sad, to painful memory = funny. I laughed when I feel extreme pain and sadness. I laugh when I make my mental state is broken. I don't laughe when others are suffering though. Just me. I only like to suffer me. I laugh instead of crying. Madness is fun.

I relate to jinx/powder because of her anxiety, and her family treating her like a nuisance. Aswell as laughing in innapropiate times. I dont always do it, but its a nervous habit of mine to smile when in anxious situations. I resonated with her character immediately.. so much that shes oddly enough one of my main comfort characters

When I’m really nervous or anxious I laugh even if there’s nothing to laugh about, I can’t really control it I just start laughing lol, so it was really interesting, I think in Jinx situation it’s a mix of all five
