I Made a Huge Mistake Waiting for Factorio Space Age DLC!

While eagerly waiting for the Factorio: Space Age DLC, I thought I was smart by researching every remaining tech after launching the rocket. But turns out, I should’ve started fresh! The DLC is reworking the starting planet, and launching a rocket will be a much earlier goal. Lesson learned!

Eventually you will be skilled enough to make the same progress 10x faster, not to mention rocket silo research and building the rocket in space age is WAY cheaper. When I launched my first rocked, I also had like 150 hours, I speedrunned it like few weeks ago and launched the rocket in less than 10 hours

I hadn't played Factorio in months but once the DLC dropped I can't stop again. I have relapsed boys. 😢

I realised a week prior that restarting when the DLC comes out was the intended thing to do so I decided to not play Factorio for a week. I am not an alcoholic but I now know what they go through when they detox because that was a rough week.

You did nothing wrong, the factory grew.

Now it's time for a new factory.

It must grow.

I did exactly the same thing, 170 hours for my first ever factory with infinite research only to start over once the warning on the main screen showed up after I purchased dlc blindly.

I kind of feel with these kind of games that it is a given. I finished my last game and waited for the DLC to land to start anew. There's new progression, new items, a whole new way to play. Plus they told us ahead of time of these changes.

Same thing happened with satisfactory, when the full release hit yeah we started over too as yeah new items, new progression, you could continue your old save but you wouldn't get the full experience and some stuff you have may not be a thing anymore.

Any game whos DLC builds upon the base game, updating things, always better to do a fresh game, specially when we are told in advance.

I'm very late to the party, but I would recommend making blueprints of all the sub-sections you made so you don't have to redesign everything from scratch.

I bought the DLC in the hour it came out, started a world, played for 20 hours and was unhappy with my base. I had 4 yellow belts of basic resources, but it wasn’t enough and the base kinda stinked. I started over again, and now I got 6 yellow belts of basic stuff, 1 platform for space science, 1 for long distance travel and 1 station collecting science from Gleba, Vulcanus and Fulgora. I am currently fueling Gleba and Aquilo with external nuclear fuel cells, and am aiming to get the last science pack.
I am about 30~ hours in.
And yeah, I am a beginner (in factorio terms), with 1500 hours (of which I only started making good bases after 1000).

Rocket research and building were made way cheaper, than it was before. My old best time from 0 to rocket was 11 hours, now I finished it in 4. In the past 2 rockets in a minute was a very good production (it's a 2000 white science per minute), now I sent a rocket less than a minute after I connected a silo to a resources. So, it's good for you to finish a vanilla game, cause it will be much simpler for you to start it again

It was obvious that you need to start over to get the full experience for dlc... I was on Factorio diet for 6 months so I could have enough energy to start :D

I just used my existing factory and that was no problem. So you don't have to worry, just use your existing save game and go for it. They migrate them pretty good.

Many of us have many many hundred hour plus factories that we end up deleting… I’ve got 5000+ hours in… but you’re acquired experience makes each play through better

I used the dlc as an excuse to start over. Hope I actually get there.

I'll give you my blunder.

I played the game for about 2 weeks before finally realizing that space age was a paid dlc.

I'm not sure how i missed it, but i also was not reading into every Friday facts blog. So i was just under the impression that it was all included in the 2.0 update.

I was talking with friends who were playing to eventually realize that our experiences were not matching (some research is now locked to other planets).

So basically i had to abandon a 2 week factory and start fresh again

The funny thing is that they mention this multiple times throughout the teasing cycle of the DLC. "You're going to want to start fresh" "You're going to want to start a new game".
Multiple times. That being said, there's nothing wrong with porting over an old save, the big thing is that some of the researches like Cliff Explosives and Spidertron are moved to the other planets, that's really it, big rebalancing of the tech and rebalance on the biters really. But likewise the rocket parts are pretty much removed from the game: satellites, RCU's, the works.

The first time I launched a rocket in about 800 hours was when I played space age for the first time and did it in about 7 hours

Trust me it’s worth it just for your own progress.

People get fast at early game by over time sort of understanding about how many machines you need of each to keep up so you won’t overbuild as much every subsequent playthrough until you get to the mega base stage

Factory must grow
Once factory doesnt grow, it needs to get optimised. Then it shrinks to be able to grow more.

Once theres no optimalisation and growing done, you start from 0, using what you have learned. So factory can grow bigger than it could ever before.

Listening to your voice high is crazy. It’s like the most fascinating thing ever. I never thought I would be able to hear that you’re speaking in a serif font but you just are.
