Jason Hickel: Why is Palestine at the center of the climate and colonial struggle? How are capitalism and the ecological crisis linked? Who really benefits from the exploitation of resources in the Global South? At the Transnational Institute's Ignite Festival in 2024, Jason Hickel argues that the Global North—the “Imperial Core”—is responsible for the excess emissions and resource extraction driving the climate breakdown. He believes that achieving economic democracy and sovereignty in the South is essential to dismantling the colonial power structures at the root of both climate change and imperial exploitation.

To understand fully what he is saying, consider these cases I outline below. I am from Pakistan. In the wake of the Gaza conflict, due to the phenomenal bycott of the CocaCola, a locally manufactured beverage "Next" is a hit. Very soon we learn that the owner of the company gets kidnapped.

Back in the days, when PEPSI came to Pakistan, there was a popular brand called "RC". Guess what PEPSI did. They bought every single glass bottle out there and so RC faced a situation where they had the drink but no bottle to package and under such conditions, it was meant to close.

A few years back, in our local Market, a good chips brand named "Oaye Hoye" came that was giving a competition to the "Lays". Lays cut down the supply line of Oaye Hoye by buying out the entire potato stock for the next few months.

When Walls ice cream came to Pakistan, we had an amazingly popular brand called "Yummy". There again we saw how the mega advertising campaign took place and basically every available place for advertisement was bought.

If this is what I know from memory and just in one country, imagine what these corporates have done to the world at large ...

That was a breath of fresh air honestly. So many pro-environmentalists, ecologists, just dances around the question of capitalism and the concept of infinite growth. They're caring more about their own self-preservation in terms of having a job by not questioning the system, rather then taking a stance and confront it.

The Global South can be more accurately refereed to as The Global Majority. The Global majority according to Michael Parenti is not under developed but over exploited.

so crazy to me that as a colonized indigenous person of and living in what is called the south pacific, i had never considered the idea of economic democracy. that really added another layer to my understanding of economic liberation and sovereignty.
