Thomas Hobbes, English philosopher, scientist, and historian, best known for his political philosophy, especially as articulated in his masterpiece Leviathan (1651). He expounds an influential formulation of social contract theory. In addition to political philosophy, Hobbes contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, jurisprudence, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, and ethics, as well as philosophy in general.. He was considered to be one of the founders of modern political philosophy.
John Locke was an English philosopher, expounded his social contract theory in his book, ”Two Treatises on Civil Government” wrote in 1660, as a defence of the constitutional monarchy which the Glorious Revolution of 1688 had established in England.
The third great exponent of the social contract was the French philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau. He was by birth a Swiss, but adopted France as his country. He lived in the pre-Revolutionary Eighteenth-Century of France, then ruled by the absolutist Bourbon Kings. Rousseau’s writings inspired the great French Revolution of 1789. He presented his theory in two books, ”namely, A Discoui-se on the Origin of Inequality and The Social Contract.
