1. Mid of pro-Palestinian students holding signs and flags at rally UPSOUND:
"Free, free Palestine. From the river to the see."
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Nadia Ali, Columbia University Student:
"I think it's important that we make our voices heard. They're not hidden, even though they're hidden from American media. We still very much think about them and we share their struggle."
3. Pro-Palestinian protesters clapping and chanting
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Nadia Ali, Columbia University Student:
"The clear bias that we received In the communication that we received from the president of the university without a single mention of the lives lost of Palestinians. Clearly we're all against violence, but we're just asking for the lives of Palestinian civilians to be acknowledged as well."
5. Wide of pro-Israel students in a circle singing
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Daniel Garren, Columbia University Student:
"I'm Jewish. I'm Israeli. My mother's Israeli. I have family there. And honestly, we're in pain. Our community was attacked."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Yola Ashkenazie, Columbia University Student:
"The rise in anti-Semitism on our campus has been abhorrent. There were students who were attacked for speaking Hebrew and for hanging up signs denouncing Hamas. There are people over there who were cheering with Palestinian flags after women were raped and stripped and then taken their dead corpses to the streets of Gaza."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of students and other protesters held dueling rallies on the campus of Columbia University Thursday to show support for a Palestinian state on one hand, and Israel on the other, as casualties from the war between Israel and Hamas continued to mount.
The demonstration, which remained peaceful, was originally organized by Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine. It was met with a counter-protest to denounce the deadly terror attack by Hamas over the weekend.
Hamas’ assault on Saturday killed more than 1,300 people in Israel, including 247 soldiers — a toll unseen in Israel for decades — and the ensuing Israeli bombardment has killed more than 1,530 people in Gaza, according to authorities on both sides. Thousands have been wounded on both sides.
"I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli. My mother's Israeli. I have family there, and honestly, we're in pain. Our community was attacked," said Daniel Garren, a student at Columbia University.
"The rise in anti-Semitism on our campus has been abhorrent," said Yola Ashkenazie, also a student at the university "There were students who were attacked for speaking Hebrew and for hanging up signs denouncing Hamas," she said.
Nadia Ali is a graduate student at Columbia and she felt compelled to attend the pro-Palestinian rally.
"I think it's important that we make our voices heard," she said. "We still very much think about them and we share their struggle." she said.
Israel was a nation in mourning Thursday. At a funeral for a 25-year-old woman killed with at least 260 other people at a desert rave, and at another service for a slain Israeli soldier, mourners sat cross-legged on the ground next to caskets, wailing or quietly weeping.
In Gaza, too, mourners buried families together in shrouds. At one funeral, they placed the battered body of a little girl in the arms of her slain father.
