In this video we talk about the current Greek flag and compare it to the previous one. We make the argument that the old one is a better design and perhaps Greece should consider changing their national flag back to the previous one.

The stripes mean Freedom or Death, so I don't really agree.

I don't think it should change back, cause the stripes have a really deep meaning and it's pretty important to our history...

No it shouldn't change. The stripes have a deep meaning. The 9 stripes symbolise freedom or death.

As a Greek, I think that the new flag is much more complicated. The stripes are nine, the letters in the word ελευθερία are also nine. Ελευθερία means freedom which comes from the phrase freedom or death (ελευθερία ή θάνατος).

Personally I'd reverse the cars. I think the old one looks classy yet simple, old fashioned. The new one is sleeker and more modern.

Unlike so many flags that are similar in design and can be easily confused, the Greek flag has a distinctive design and cannot be taken for the flag of another country. It should remain as it is.
The nine stripes represent the nine syllables (not letters) of the Greek phrase "freedom or death", i.e. e-lef-the-ri-a-i-tha-na-tos . In both cases the "th" in the syllables is unvoiced as in the English word "thin".
It is the flag of a proud nation that has contributed immensely to human civilisation. And, despite many centuries of enslavement from various invaders and conquerors has managed to maintain its language, identity and exemplary democratic and freedom loving values. ZHTO!

There are not many the stripes. They have a mining. The 9 stripes is from the word Ελευθερία (freedom). Each stripe is for one letter.

You are right about the fact that it would be better if we went back to the old flag. Cause the old isn't an immediate copy of an English flag unlike the current one we have ( the old flag just happened to be similar to the english one). Meanwhile the current flag was a copy of the english east India company flag. It was introduced by a man with friendly ties to England. And well.. That can't be good. Although the reason there are 9 stripes is important and the number shouldn't be changed. It should either go to the old one. Or not change at all.

The 9 stripes of the current flag mean something they are not there just for decoration (the nine stripes mean freedom or death, it means that because we have learned out of history that Greeks can't leave if they are not in control of their own freedom so in my opinion the current flag is better than the old one)

Each stripe is a syllabus for 'Ελευθερία ή θάνατος' - 'freedom of death' the slogan that through the rebel against ottoman empire let Greeks to their once again freedom.

Very accurate on the issues of the current flag. The most elegant way of fixing the colors blending together is by introducing an additional shade of blue. Try this, deep blue background with a white cross on the top left box, lighter blue stripes and white stripes. So, 3 colors in total instead of 2. Looks superb imo.

You should consider the flags when they are moving or hanging. In that case the modern flag is as beautiful as the old flag. Perhaps more beautiful. As an emblem though, the old flag is more beautiful. That is why it is still used as such.

If you ask my oppinion as a Greek we use today the stripe one but the old one still exists sometimes we use both but if you ask me which one i prefer i always prefer older flags better but the flag we using now is more modern flag plus stripes meaning freedom or death also cross means eastern orthodox and blue color is the color of the sea so i guess curent flag is also great and doesnt matter who we use but what history they have and trust me history of Greece is one of the biggest and oldest in this universe and this is the only fact here...

I can think of a lot of reasons why it shouldn’t change:
1) The current flag has reached a huge level of popularity
2) Regarding clarity and simplicity, there is no true issue. The canton is placed in the location which always shows regardless of the wind, in fact, this is the point of a canton. The design is easy to remember because of the symbolism behind the stripes.
3) The stripes have a very important symbolic meaning. Besides symbolising the sea and waves, the number of stripes spell out the Greek motto “Freedom or death (Eleftheria I Thanatos) “E-lef-the-ri-a (5 blue)” “I-tha-na-tos (4 white).” By removing the stripes besides a huge and important part of the flag’s symbolism being removed it loses its very fmaous part. Regardig Clarity, it’s common for flags to create new images based on the initial ones, and it usually helps give a flag its memorability. None of the important symbols are obstructed.
4) The old flag is basically identical to French slave ship flags used in the Atlantic Slave trade.
5) The old flag’s symbols stand mainly for religion instead of freedom, the main symbolism of the current flag. The Greek government already receives a lot of criticism for having a state religion.
6) The old flag incorporates just a cross on a field. This is popular in Western European monarchies as it was a common symbol in the Holy Roman Empire, but Greece generally uses traditional military symbols from the Greek revolution in cases such as flags.

Really good video idea! I think this could be made into a series. I liked the different arguments and perspectives brought up.
