Quick note, in the video I made an offhand comment about Alexander not really being Greek as he was from Macedonia. As many of you have pointed out, this is quite anachronistic, as in this period Alexander WAS categorically Greek as the separation between today's Greece and North Macedonia can only be dated to the coming of the Slavs. Clearly this rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but please be assured the comment was made through my own ignorance rather than any political motivation to sow dissent.

4:13 Ah yes, the famous Slav Alexandrovich the Great, he even lived in Greece before the rest of the slavs came to europe.

Speaking of flags : every time I see a Greek flag I can not help but being confused by seeing the flag of my native country, Uruguay.
From afar they do look kind of the same, although they are very different.
Greetings from Toronto.

That flag is the battle flag of St. Michael. The same flag was used by French kings and a variation of that flag became the flag of Quebec.

Please be careful about saying that Alexander was not Greek. It show a severe lack of knowledge of History

Alexander the Great was Greek.
Ancient macedonians were a greek tribe related to Hercules.
They were cousins with the Dorians Spartans.they also participated in in the Olympic games.
So how come they were not Greeks?

Excuse me.. But calling yourselves a history channel and at the same time saying that Alexander the Great was Macedonian and not Greek is rather hillarious. Please be careful.

since when is alexander the great non-greek macedonian? You should visit his familys burial site in Vergina greece and see with your own eyes beyond any doubt that his family was ancient greek and common sense would have him be greek as well. No?

By saying that Alexander the Great was Macedonian rather than Greek holds an obvious historic mistake. Its not us Greeks that claim that but certified well-recognized historians and scientist

At first there werent any "Greeks" before Alexander and Phillip

There were kingdoms of todays Greek tribes: Macedonians, Dorians, Thracians, Ionas, Illyrians, Achaians etc. Phillip united all those kingdoms by force and the Alexander powered by all theGreek tribes invaded Asia and defeat the Persian Empire.

You missed to explain why there are NINE stripes of blue and white on the flag.

blue symbolizes the sky and seas and white denotes the purity of the Greek independence struggle and the cross represents the Christian religion

Mate before you decide to post a historic subject publicly you should study the history as it was written. Macedonians were, are, and always going to be Greeks not because i say so but it is well stated such as to every ancient text that we've got from that Era. As far as it concern the banana state that it''s founded recently up above north Greece it defines the claims of the ex soviet union (now Russia) that all of us fighting so intensely nowadays.... I wonder if it's wise to support an revisionist idea such as (Macedonians were not Greeks) when we're so much against it at the same time. what do you think?

That was an interesting exploration. Perhaps you shouldn't quote me on this but another likely origin of the contemporary version of Greek flag(the one with the 9 stripes, which was officially instituted as the naval flag on March 15th 1822) I've read in the past is that it derives from the very similar in design and colours flag/heraldic insignia of the Kallergis noble family (allegedly a branch of the Byzantine Phokades noble family) that were very prominent in Crete when the island was under Venician rule (yes, the (Cudenhove-)Kalergi guy of "Kalergi Plan" fame was also their descendant)...
Another possible explanation I've read for the colour selection is that of the four primary colous found in most flags, White & Blue were the only ones not traditionally associated with the Ottomans and/or Islam, unlike Red or Green which were considered to be Ottoman/Islam related.
While I probably don't subscribe to the idea that the colours have anything to do with ancient history, your mentioning of Alexander being Macedonian and therefore not Greek was kind of confusing though 😕... This is contradicting what all ancient sources imply about Alexander's identity and is sort of like saying that Pericles was Athenian thus not Greek or that Goethe was Hessian thus not a German.
PS. Trivia: Some flags that are similar in design/colours to the old Greek flag, aside from the Finnish and some other Scandinavian flags which I think you already mentioned, are the flag of Quebec, the flag of Martinique, the old royal French naval flag, the flag of Turin (Italy), the flag of Indianapolis (USA), the flag of Zwolle (Netherlands), the flag of Pärnu (Estonia), the Shetland Islands flag (in Scotland, but also the Scottish flag itself), the flag of Marseille(France) and the Eureka Rebellion flag (Australia)...
[please comment bellow if you can think of more examples]
