In 1992 I was a Marine stationed on Okinawa, Japan for 12 months at my first duty station. My roomy, Mathew was a white kid from Fremont, Ohio and I was a black kid from Bronx, NY (by way of Trinidad). He would play country music and watch NASCAR every chance he got. I was going crazy. Garth Brooks was his favorite. Then he started listening to Reggae and R&B (just a little). My son was born while I was overseas, Mathew is the one who told me I had a boy because my leg was broken and I couldn't get to the Duty phone on the 4th deck (floor) of our barracks. Mathew was also at my side during the funeral service for my son 29 years later. Music.

"I could've missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance". With joy comes sorrow. Such haunting lyrics.

This was the song my daughter chose for the father-daughter dance at her wedding. She got cancer and passed away 2 years later. I can't believe how fitting and prophetic the lyrics are. I break into tears every time I hear it STILL, after 16 years.

I lost my husband on September 13th 2024. We had been married 29 years. He was only 51. We were high school sweethearts. We talked about this song if either of us were to ever pass away. I played this for my baby at his funeral. My heart went with him when he left. He was my whole heart. I feel so empty and lost now.

I danced with my brother in law to this song. He got shot in a hunting accident 2 weeks later. I still can't listen to this without crying. Jimmy I miss you so much.

My wife just asked me to look up this song. She's out of town for a funeral so I presume she heard it there. I started reading the comments. My heart goes out to all of you that connect with this song because of a loss. You all have my deepest condolences, hopes and prayers. Thank you Garth. I've never been a country fan but this is beautiful. Thank you for touching all of those souls.

My little sister is the biggest Garth Brooks fan I’ve ever known. She knows every word to every song he ever released. She entered into hospice assisted care 2 nights ago fighting her battle with cancer. Tonight I lie awake with her on my heart as she continues her battle with terminal breast cancer. This is her favorite song. She’s wise beyond her 38 years to choose this as her favorite song. No more poignant words have ever been spoken; I could have missed the pain, but I’da have to miss the dance. I love you sis.

My wife of 44 years passed away 6/13/2024 from a sixteen month battle with cancer and I had this song played at her service. This song tells a beautiful story.

Reading the comment section as the song plays in the background is heartbreaking. You can see how much love and pain there is in losing a loved one.

One of the greatest songs ever produced. Not only is the poetry great but the melody and music is just beautiful. It’s a classic, no doubt about it.

A friend sang this while we were gathered around my husband in hospice. He lost his battle with cancer two days later. Always loved this song, but it’s even more special now, because it reminds me of him.

I'm not a Country music fan, but this is definitely one of the most touching and symbolic songs ever written. If it doesn't hit you with tears, its because you've probably never felt a powerful loss in your life or you're not in tune with life and your heart.

I miss the original video. It brings me back to an earlier time. It first reminds me of the relationship I had with my father and the video images of John Wayne take me back because my father admired him and actually looked like him. The song also reminds me of my precious daughter who I lost at an early age. Yes, "I could have missed the pain" but looking back, I would have never missed the dance. Love you Amber.
