Instead of throwing that box of sunglasses in the garbage he should have gone around town giving them away to anyone who is NOT an alien just acting friendly and saying "Want a free pair of sun glasses?"> Most people love getting free things. If several dozen people are all freaking out about the exact same thing at the exact same time its harder to write them off as nutjobs. Strength in numbers.

"Holly" may be the worst villain in this movie. The human TRAITORS who work for the aliens KNOWING what is happening are way worse. In any war a traitor is hated even more than an enemy.

Possibly one of my favourite lines ever uttered on film:

“I’m here to chew bubble gum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubble gum.”

This movie has actually aged very well for a 40+ years old movie

This was not a film, this was a real life documentary of our world. Wake up humanity.

A Sci-Fi movie either remains entertainment or stays around long enough to become reality.

The people who refused to put the glasses on remind me of my mother. If you tell her anything negative she says "I don't want to know", if you try to teach her anything it's "I can't learn this". Yet she seems depressed in her ignorance. I used to try and talk to her but it was useless, she really wants to ignore the world anď focus on herself.

When I saw this as a teen when it aired on amc, I was moved with the plot of how society was being controlled and manipulated by a species the human didn’t even know they were being govern by, also it’s sad that the two main characters didn’t live to see their victory by exposing all of the aliens.

I remember seeing this on TV as a teen and thinking it was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen. Now I truly understand it.

This.... aged well, actually. Society needs to find our "sunglasses" before it's too late.

"It's time to chew gum and kick ass (or vice versa). And I'm all out of gum." was the most iconic line ever.

Making the villans aliens is genius. If they made it overtly political then they would have lost half the audience due to feeling attacked on their ideologies. But because it's aliens vs humans everyone is in the same boat. You could make it so the people who are in control just use people's ideologies to divide them but I don't think it would have the same effect. It's too on the nose and some people would feel uncomfortable and tune it out or turn it off.

This films literally portrays the world we live in now specially they show drones back in 1988 no one would have thoughts of that then I guess !

John Carpenter said he made this film as a wake up call. Even back then in the 80s, he was suspicious of then US President Ronald Reagan's so-called "Reaganomics." I'm so glad this film is now a major cult classic.

As good a movie as this was I kind of did not want it to have such a sad ending for the hero. I love the "heroes journey" and I wanted an ending where he survives, leads a successful rebellion against the aliens, and gets recognized as a hero by the entire world for his part in helping liberate them.

The crazy part is this movie isn’t as strange as real life itself!
