Mark and Floor are not related. They were in a band together called After Forever. Simone and Floor are best friends. Epica is a band from the Netherlands. That is where Floor is from.

Simone and Floor have been friends for a long time. Mark Jansen was in After Forever which was Floors first band, they are not related. Simone was about 3 or 4 months pregnant during this concert if I remember correctly.

Epica has two albums where Simone sings almost exclusively in the more classical style. The albums in the middle of their discography have her using a mix of pop and classical oriented vocals. Nowadays she belts a lot, but Sancta Terra is from their third album, so it's very operatic.

From Epica, I'd suggest Serenade of Self Destruction live, where Simone brings some dinamicity to the performance, along with Mark's growls.

One thing I'd like to see is a vocal coach commenting on Floor Jansen's vocal evolution. Earlier in her career she used her operatic voice more, although she always played with other kinds of sounds, becoming this versatile singer she is nowadays. So, I recommend Monolith of Doubt live by After Forever (her first band).

And while I'm at it, I'd suggest another band of the genre - Therion. They are somewhat different from both Epica and Nightwish, and excellent. They had one particular formation of vocalists that was incredible. So, I rec Ginnungagap live Gothik, with their 4 singers that bring a lot to the live performance.

The type of headbanging Floor uses is called Windmilling. And she is a beast at it. And it does not hurt her neck as of yet. She seems to be seamlessly be able to transition from windmilling for an extended time into her angelic singing as well.
Simone usually does more intense headbanging as well, but she was a few months pregnant at the time so she held back there.

2 of the best female voices of metal on the stage together! Maybe 2 of the best voices of metal period.

First note heard by Simone "wow! Who is this girl!?" Was Wondering your exact reaction when I realized in the beginning you didn't know of Epica or Simone. Both voices but especially Simone make me get emotional. Never have had this reaction to music I loved in my life. Grew up in a house where I heard a lot of classical singing from 1900s on. Nelson Eddie, etc.

This video is from shortly before Floor started with Nightwish (2012). It was a special concert to celebrate Epica's 10th anniversary. Floor and Mark Jansen NOT related, just a common last name there(equivalent to Johnson). They were however both founding members of After Forever.

If you really like Floor and you get the chance to see her live do it. If you want to hear Floor in her days with After Forever, look up Monolith of Doubt or My Pledge of Allegiance Pt. 1. I didn't know about After Forever or Floor until I saw them open for Nightwish about a decade ago and I have been a fan since about halfway through the first song. Edit: thinking about it being 2019 now it was more than a decade ago but still.

I will strongly second your reacting to Epica - Cry For The Moon (studio version). That shows Simone alone with her band and would be a song well worth commenting on. Simone is a wonderful singer, anyone who would invite Floor to share the stage with her is a pretty confident singer!!

Thank you! I never get bored seeing this! Nightwish and Epica are like different sides of coin for me, really love'em both. Musically they are quite different though, under the label 'symphonic metal' of course.

Would like to hear your opinion on Delain, and their singer Charlotte Wessels? :) Quite new song by them, "Masters of Destiny"
