I bought a 300w pedal assisted only ebike from Walmart for $500. I am a big guy, about 350lbs and trying to get into shape. I watched many videos like this, and read many comments that said a low power cheap ebike would be worthless for someone my size and they pointed me in the direction of ebikes in the $2-3000 range. I personally dont have that kind of money to spend on something I wasn't even sure I would enjoy. So I ignored them and picked one up at Walmart and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

The reason I bought the bike at Walmart was because I knew if the people on the internet were right, I could simply return it. I am happy to say that I am extremely impressed with the performance. I live in Michigan, we dont have mountains but there are lots of hills in my area that I used to have to walk up while pushing my regular bike. With the ebike I can simply pedal like I would on flat ground with a normal bike and the little motor scoots me up to the top just fine.

Now I'm fully aware that my weight will wear out the components faster and that this bike wont last forever, but now that I've experienced an ebike for the first time I wont have an issue investing the extra money for good quality higher power ebike when that time comes.

I think there are probably a lot of people like me who would like an ebike to lose weight but get turned off the idea when people say they have to spend thousands to start. So anyone reading this in a situation similar to mine, I don't think there is any problem starting out with a lower power "cheap" ebike.

I mean to crank 250watts into your pedals is actually insanely hard for longer than a few seconds so most normal people travel around with 90 watts sometimes up to 120 watts.

So yes 250watts is more than enough
It won't be as fast as a 750watt motor obviously but usually you just wanna have less effort / normal flat land effort while driving uphill.

That also means you have more energy left in your battery to travel around more.

Basically it's a question of if you actually wanna ride a bicycle or if you wanna ride a small motorbike with pedals.

I would always prefer a bicycle cause I still wanna be able to have a somewhat bicycle like feeling while riding a bike

Bafang geared hubs are built for torque regardless of power. Direct drives are not they are built for speed. And mid drives utilise your gears so they're pretty good at both however a lot of people ruin their mid drive because they dont use the gears properly and put the motor under a lot of strain and they break.

In the US people want to just sit on a bike and do nothing. They want to just use the throttle. Here in the UK we do actually want to ride bikes to stay fit so 250 watts is more than enough for the UK. You can get up hills with 250 watts because we use our legs to pedal and put the effort in. Obesity, USA versus UK no comparison. USA wins that one. Say no more.

250w is fine unless your a big guy I weigh about 14st and I get around just fine on mine.. in the uk we can only have a 250w motor and the throttle can only assist you up to 4mph

100 percent, in the uk our limit is 250 watts, I have 750 and that's perfect, cheers Shane uk

I've used throttle only on a 250w up hills. It goes but slowly.

750W IS a horsepower by the way, one HP is equivalent to 745.7 watts (not googled)

I live in the hardest part of the UK for cycling and just about every bike is a 250w ebike. I'm late to the game but I'm done with hills and headwinds. 250w will be better than nothing.

I have a 250, 500, 750, and 1, 000 watt e-bikes. Pending how the computer delivers the power delivery; I like the 1000 watts.

I had an ebike that had a 1, 000 watts motor that peaks out at around 1, 250. No matter the level, and peddling it was awful up a slight hill. Not to mention heavy.

Rider weight makes a difference. I bet I can get any 250 watt up a hill. Gentleman this size would want 2000w for hills because even 1000w would be too much strain for any man weight above 80KG
