Every time I hear about people who escaped I am reminded of my own country´s history. I genuinely hope that one day NK and SK will be reunited like Germany. It was tough the first years and sadly till this day some of the older generations still don´t like it this way. But many of the younger generations are thankful about the reunion and all the possibilities we have now. Hopefully in the near future younger NK generations will be able to experience this too.

While he was escaping North Korea in March 2008, I was concerned with helping my sister-in-law with her high school graduation ranking. There was a problem in the ranking that dropped her from #2 in her high school class down to #4. That month (March), we met with members of the school district. It really felt difficult for her -- despite the fact that she was already accepted into Stanford University on a full scholarship.

This man's story makes me feel ashamed. While we were worried about my sister-in-law's high school ranking, this man was risking his life to escape North Korea. In the time where my sister-in-law was beginning her years at Stanford University, he was hiding out in China. It really puts things into perspective.

I wish you the best in your journey. South Korea is very lucky to have you! In fact, you represent the best in this world. My country, the United States, would be lucky to have you too. Contrary to media depictions, Americans are very aware that we are a nation of immigrants. We cherish those who believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I’m glad your mother decided to contact you and help you. You’re lucky, some defectors said they were shot at. And I think many younger generations are brain washed thoroughly nowdays that they won’t consider running away. But hopefully there’ll be freedom for all of them one day. It’s sad to know people are living this way in the 21st century.
