Great tips! The best way I've found to verify a tool is exactly on center is to lock the spindle at C0. and scribe a line with the tool. Then index, lock, and scribe at C180. If the center is perfect, the 2 lines will line up. If they don't line up, measure the distance between them, and shim/adjust by 1/2.

If you've ever struggled with chatter while boring, a damped boring bar is the easiest way to achieve repeatable good results. A bar like this can be used to bore shallow holes or deep. MAQ has 10 to 1 length to diameter ratio bars that are very affordable for anyone who doesn't need extreme performance like this 15 to 1 bar. This MAQ bar has a tungsten mass suspended in a Non-Newtonian fluid fluid. The mass responds to changes in the internal pressure created when the bar flexes and chatter wavelengths are counteracted.

Boring Bar Pro Setup Tips

The knock test is a great indicator of how the bar is going to behave, any high pitch vibrations while knocking may also be present when machining. This includes the workpiece itself and its vibration tendencies. Generally, the bar should be parallel with the lathes X and Z Axis. This can easily be checked if the bar has flats like the one seen here. A precision square can be placed against the turret 90° to the boring bar for a quick check. Another method is to run an indicator along the flats to ensure the bar is parallel to the axis. There are a lot of ways to set a bar, but these are the two most common.

If you are having issues boring, here are a few tips and tricks to minimize them.
1. Minimize the Bars Stickout
2. Reduce Cutting Speed
3. Increase Depth of Cut (Rule of thumb is at least your tool nose radius)
4. Increase Feed Rate if allowable (Increasing flex on the bar may curb chatter)
5. Choose a Smaller Tool Nose Radius
6. Ensure proper bar alignment. This includes the bars rotation relative to the centerline and XYZ alignment.
7. SSV (Spindle Speed Variation) If your machine is capable of slowing down and speeding up the spindle automatically at a chosen interval, it can work wonders to reduce chatter just like the dampened bar.
8. Grip the bar by at least 4 x's the diameter. 1.000" bar = 4.000" grip.
9. Use cylindrical clamping. Imagine trying to hold a weight with your fingertips (set screws) vs. your entire hand (cylindrical clamping) One is much more secure than the other and deadens vibrations.
10. Choose the largest bar possible for the bore
11. Reduce Feed Rate if it helps
12. Use Coolant.. Just the addition of coolant can aid in effectively shearing a chip.
13. Switch from a steel bar to carbide or a special dampened bar, which allows much longer overhangs without vibration. (Steel 3/1 Carbide 6/1 Damped 15/1+ overhang possible)
14. Workholding of the piece itself, if the part itself has a tendency for vibration, no boring bar will fix that.
15. Tricks like a magnet on the back of the bar or hanging a weight. The magnet oscillates with the chatter frequency and can counteract it.

Is the Boring bar being on centre more so for CNC machines ?. I have seen in manual lathe books in the past and for an example 'The Hercus Textbook of Turning' says the Boring bar should be 1/64" to 1/32" above centre. I have always gone by that for Boring bars in a manual lathe and never had a problem.

I used to .5 solid carbide bar 6' long for doing hard turning it had a tiny insert mounted, been too long don't remember the manufacture

Anti vibration bars are great except they cost a grand and the anti vibration does go away after a few years of use. We use kennametal quick change bars. Can't speak on those.
