Don't Buy The SPY ETF? | SPY Stock Analysis

The SPY stock market ETF has been around since 1993 and remains the most popular ETF for investors. Offering diversity and exposure across every sector, the SPY offers a low risk way to invest in the stock market. But what are the costs of investing in the SPY? Are the better risk-averse options in today's market? I offer two options: QQQ and IYC to consider before you invest in the SPY.

Stocks and ticker symbols mentioned in this video include...

SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)
Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)
iShares U.S. Consumer Services ETF (IYC)

SPY, VOO, VTI, ARKG, all very solid choices in my books !

Almost literally every stock that dropped in early March has regained its value from before the drop, SPY included. This is horrible advice. Was it the biggest increase? Of course not. But it was solid before and it's solid now, no reason to think it won't ever be solid

I’m not a big fan of index funds but I gotta tell you, when the market hit the lows at the end of March I bought some SPY long-dated calls. I’m ITM now and up 153%. I think your video makes sense in ordinary circumstances but when you posted it, it couldn’t have made less sense. SPY was a safe way of making some decent gains. Anybody who didn’t follow your advice and just bought the stock on the day of your video would be up 13% right now.

Blast from the past, this was a great refresher that showed up in my feed today.

Nice vid. I would caution about over weighting on sectors of the economy. An ETF to consider in my view would be Vanguard's VUG if you want a tilt toward growth but still diversifying away from tech/consumer discretionary. VUG has historically outperformed the S&P500 and QQQ (since inception) with far less fees. Believe me, when your portfolio goes beyond 7 figures (which I hope everyone achieves) the difference of 0.04 vs 0.20% is quite noticeable.

For passive, long-term investors, I'd highly recommend the PowerShares Nasdaq-100 ETF (QQQ). Technology is the future and it will keep outperforming any S&P 500 ETF like SPY or VOO. It's beyond me why anybody would ever want to invest in SPY/VOO if you can have the QQQ.

The nice bonus for such index ETFs is, that they simply cannot go bankrupt; even if multiple stocks would go to 0 (bankrupt), other stocks would simply take their place. So a passive investor could suffer a 60-80 % loss in a severe recession/depression, but eventually the ETF would recover and the investor would gain even much more if he/she buys more shares during those dips.

Great content, Geoff! I'm wondering what is your take on dollar cost averaging and periodic investments with ETFs. Would you recommend it to casual investors? Would you do it monthly? Quarterly? Or would you just buy more on the dips without sticking to a rigid plan? thanks.

Would investing in QQQ over S&P500 have more risk even in the long term?

Also you said 1 or 2 funds/ETFs is not a portfolio. What about the Bogle 2 fund portfolio ?

This is very very dumb. If you can't invest in spy then there is nothing to invest in

If you are the type to double down when a stock you investment goes down. Stick with SPY, you have zero chance of losing your money. If it goes down, you still make the dividend. Don't complicate your life.
