Was the Super Saiyan form created out of Laziness?

False rumors and myths come with any fandom however one that's particularly been sitting around this one for some time is that series author Akira Toriyama, created the Super Saiyan transformation because he was too lazy to ink the hair.

So was the classic transformation really born out of a desire just to slack off or is there more to the story? Well, join me today as we go over that and more, in today's video!

Dude imagine being called "lazy" when you wanted to improve the workflow, ease the work of your assistant and to increase the contrast between the normal and super saiyan form

The fact he made it so the assistants wouldn't have to do a lot of coloring for a long running weekly manga isn't laziness, it's being generous and conservative. Good that this video is debunking this annoying misinformation.

This is one of those few instances where you can say "Others may call it lazy. I call it efficient", and being 1000% right.

Obviously it was a cost cutting measure for the ink but yeah it makes it easier on his assistant.

It is funny that something that was made to make the assistant's work easier ended up making it harder since new transformations need more time dedicated to them.

I think it is weird that people believe Akira Toriyama was lazy when he clearly wasn't. All mangaka's claim they are lazy or has some kind of flaw. It how the Japanese show humbleness. Kishimoto also claimed to be lazy.

2:26 so if you read the Japanese originals for that page, you'll notice that "Super Saiyan" is written differently. here, it's entirely in Katakana with "person (hito/jin)" being the only Kanji「スーパーサイヤ人」Whereas in later installments, it's written with the Kanji "chou" [超サイヤ人」 This means that at the time the panel on screen was written, it wasn't a "transformation, " it was a standard Japanese sentence written as a bit of speculative sarcasm from Napa. Only later would the term be repurposed into a name.

If you still aren't getting it: Imagine if a line of dialogue went _"Wow, he must be some ultra crazy type of human, "_ only for there to be a transformation years later officially named _"UltraCrazy HumanType"_

If you're a writer who excels in improvising it like Toriyama does, it's likely he or his editor, or even a fan taking the idea literally just really liked the idea of a "Super Saiyan" after writing it and it came back in a new context. It's just one of those things that really worked when putting the pieces together. Not some masterful planning on Toriyama's end.

It may be confusing and seem planned if you're following english dubs made with foresight on their side, but when the line was written and adapted, it definitely was not.

Toriyama is just humble. If we are being honest the man literally inspired countless artists and creators today. A lazy person wouldn't have that kind of impact.

You can find comments like these under nearly every r/dbz post you come across. People spreading a bunch of outdated, smooth-brained rumors because they’re not quite savvy enough to have done their own research.

It's getting frustrating to see laziness accusations in relation to time efficient measures. Dragonball especially has always used the negative space and black space in great ways to show a clear and concise panel. Pretending that the gestures, backgrounds, and other characters don't exist in order to push a laziness angle is just silly. I feel bad for the artists that will see efficiency as laziness because of these clown posts and become stunted in their growth because of it.

This was actually something I used to believe, because it was told to me from a "factual" source. It's good to be wrong, because now I can be corrected like this. Thank you very much for putting this out there.

I thought that the other reason was because that it fit in with the 90's "delinquent"/rebellious look among youth at the time.

Also, the Grand Elder makes a reference to the Super Saiyan when Krillin visits him, so that might've been an indication of the concept developing around that time.

Wow, another potential piece of misinformation that fans had took and ran with. Thank you for educating the public

Laziness or not, Toriyama turned his undesire to color in Goku's hair into one of the greatest moments in anime/manga history.

It's always important to think of Dragon Ball in the context of Toriyama wanting to minimize inking. I can never unsee any decision to make a character have light colors or transform a character into one with less dark shades as brilliant move by Toriyama to work less.

It's still one of my favorite transformations in the series so idrc
