Dont you square them so you can take a derivative because the "natural" answer would be the abs which is a pain to deal with unlike the differetiable squared function so you could for example find when the sum of the squared distances is at a minimum (i.e. the take the partial derivative of the sum and set it to 0 and solve using methods like Newton Raphson)
