Virology Lectures 2020 #26: Therapeutic viruses

Basic virology research has provided a fundamental understanding about viral genomes, replication, and interaction with the host that together with clinical research has created the growing field of therapeutic virology. In this final session of Virology Lectures 2020, we describe different viruses used for gene therapy, how they work, and examples of their use for vaccines, monogenic gene therapy, and viral oncotherapy.

Thank you for this course. As I follow TWIV occasionally since a couple of years, I tried to follow this course two years ago, just for my general culture. I soon realized that I did not understand enough of molecular biology (I am a retired computer specialist), so I followed some simple courses in that area and started this course again this year, intrigued by the rumour if a new virus in some city of China I never heard about before.
It is a tribute to the clarity of your explanations that I was able to follow your course and to acquire what I believe is a good general understanding of the subject. Naturally, this is somewhat superficial, I do not remember the name and details of the various genes and molecules mentioned, I not tested my knowledge beyond the few quizz, I lack the required background in biology, but at least I now have a general understanding which allows me to appreciate the complexity and diversity of this topic (and also the fascination you can have for it).
So I am very grateful that you made this course freely available, I hope that other people will realize how much we own to the scientific method and the scientific research.
Hear you on TWIV

Thanks Professor Racaniello for a really great lecture. It is good to hear about viruses "the kind that don't make you sick". We need viruses more than people

It is not common to come across an educator who has such a strong command of his/her field that he/she can explain cutting edge research in simple terms understandable to the public but not too dumbed down that does not demonstrate the complexity of the field.

Kudos to Dr. Racaniello for sharing with us the wonders of the viruses and more importantly, the amazing work that the virologist are doing in the field.

This course gave me an awe for what the viruses and the cells do. Next time I have a cold or flu (or perhaps mild SARS-COV-2) even though the experience would be painful, I will remember the complexity that the virus use to overcome my cells and the defenses that my body deploys to reduce the damage.

When we extend our awareness beyond what is "our body" versus a "foreign body", the whole interaction looks like a dance between the virus and us that has been practiced for centuries yet it has thousands of improvisations every time it is executed. What an amazing performance to witness!

That was a very interesting course! Despite it is completely out of my field, I am an engineer, the very good quality of the lectures allowed me to catch some basic key aspects of this amazing discipline. Now I am even more curious than when I started. Thank you very much prof. Racaniello!

Thank You Professor Racaniello. I've made it through all 26 of your lectures and you have opened up a whole new world for me. I thought I was going to listen to maybe just the first few lectures to better understand viruses in the context of SARS CoV2 but just got hooked and kept going. I will definitely have to revisit your lectures and buy your textbook for the knowledge to sink in. And yes, I will continue to learn and especially from you on your other media. I didn't expect to learn so much and enjoy the learning as well! Thank you again ever so much.

Well done Professor! Lots of information to digest but I now have a somewhat clearer picture of viruses. Thanks for putting this up for all to see.

Thanks so much for sharing these lectures. I watched Britt Glaunsinger's lecture on Coronavirus about 5 weeks ago which led me to your virology 2020 series. I had no intention of watching the entire series at the start but became fascinated by virology and am still here 26 lectures later. I studied biology to BSc level almost 40 years ago and have since taught biology to teenagers so it was fun stimulating my grey matter at this level after so long. Following your TWIV podcasts too.

Finally finished the course. Only took a global pandemic to do so. I've watched one lecture per day for the past 26 days! Thank you Vincent. This will help me finish up my PhD. Will stay tuned to TWIV as usual.

I jus wanna thank u for Sharing ur immense knowledge in the subject matter. U have edified a young blacc man from the hood to the point where i feel lilke a freshman on college taking virology but u male it so easy to understand i share all ur videos and watch them all thecway thru i never knew how interesting and how intrigued i was by the subject matter til i caught ur what is a virus video lecture and i subscribed that day abd watch a lecture a day to try and keep up rewatch when i dont fully understand take notes all cuz u are teaching so well and disseminate such criitical information even the basic level to where anyone who has a serious interest in the science absorb easily thank u for whst u do i for one appreciate ur information especially in such a raw, real, non political context. U guys jus dont realize how far yall are reaching when put these educational lectures out. Sum ppl have to pay for this type of information and u om youtube doin them for free u have lifetime fan and subscriber in the hood of Houston texas. Thanks again

Brilliant course. You need some molecular biology but nothing wildly complicated. I’ve binged this in about a week because it’s so fascinating.
I’m a programmer by trade so reprogramming cells feels like familiar territory!

It's incredible how the bests lectures that i've ever had have been with a professor that works in another university and I'haven't seen in person. Thanks a lot, you have turned on my interest on virology research, I'll try to get into a Virology phd once I finish the Msc!!!
