In the Army they are often referred to as Cheese charges.

The Marines call them increments to reduce confusion.

I believe the industry term is cheese.

Called an augmenting charge in UK. Unused ones used to be collected by the mortar platoon on exercise and when we had a 'smoker' on last night they were burned - newbie challenge was to jump bare asked over the burning 'augies' - welcome to mortar platoon, the animals of the battalion.

Mortar shells already have propellant inside of them but they don't shoot very far those increments that you had on there she was distant so you can put 1 2 or 3 depending on the size length and girth of it you know what I mean

Another interesting fact, it's nitrocellulose. Basically cotton that's been soaked in high proof nitric acid. That's where smokeless powder comes from.

A lot has changed since I was in. They were sewn squares with a hole in the middle and slit to the edge the color of swiss cheese. A stack was roughly 1/4 inch thick. Very volatile stuff but fun to fuck around with. I was a grunt and had friends in mortar teams who had access to them. 4th of July back home got interesting after that.

Before i learned mortars and such from being just... way to into implements of war, i used to think mortars were like explosive warhead RPGs mounted to a plate and aimed at the sky. This makes way more sense, lol.

The extra "poof" we used in the SA.degence force on the 60 a d 81mm were plastic horse shoe shaped devices we called "lading" loosely translated as -load or charge

Just charge. Or Cheese charge. Mortars have never really called them incriments. The only ones to ever call them incriments are typically Mortar LT's

Yes. But actually no. You can fire a mortar without any cheese charges on it. It just doesn't fly as far.

Those russian increments looks so janky compared to the US ones

Throwback to a couple years ago when the JGSDF used a charge ten instead of a charge 4 and the 81mm round went straight over the mountain backstop and landed in a local village.

No injuries thankfully.
