Strumming WITHOUT a Pick – 3 Techniques That Work!

Hey friends! Quick question & answer video here, where Tim writes in asking about playing without a pick: he says his thumb is doing him just fine -- and he's wondered if he is missing out on anything. In this video I'll give my thoughts (if it works for you, keep it up!) -- and show off 3 basic techniques for strumming without using a pick, should you find yourself curious. To be honest, the last 1-2 years I've found myself more and more comfortable strumming without a pick -- so I'm quite happy to show you some of my favorite approaches.

Great video, as usual, David. I often find that it's easier for me to learn a new song without using a pick. For some reason, it's easier this way for me to focus on the left-hand fingerings, not only for the basic chords but also the lead parts and fills. Then once I'm comfortable with the song, I'll use a pick or a fingerpicking style, as appropriate.

I use my finger type to strum is that ok I curl it up cuz when I play it with my thumb I scrap my skin sometimes
