For those interested, Ernest Shackleton, mentioned here by Elon, was a British sailor and Antarctic explorer, he is known for a couple of expeditions, one of which is most famous due to Shackleton's ship "endurance" getting crushed by the ice and sinking in 1915. Despite all odds, Shackleton led his men through the ice and reached Elephant Island with their lifeboats where they were finally saved in 1917. He did not lose even one man during their journey.

If Elon came to me and said "I can send you to Mars right now but your chance of survival is less than 20%" i'd snap that up immediately! Yes, it does sound stupid but to be carved into the history books for all future generations as one of the first to ever set foot on Mars would be worth it.

I don't think the worst conditions on earth are gonna outweigh the regular conditions on Mars

“You might not make it back, but if you do it’ll be glorious.” The spirit of adventure is not dead for mankind.

I volunteer as tribute, I've nothing here at home and the thought of dying on an unknown world, it thrills and excites my blood. I care not of my life ends, because when its all said and done, history will remember those who sacrificed everything for the better future

People have ALWAYS died in the name of progress, it's okay. I'll do it for species.

It’s the same way our soldiers go to protect our country. You sacrifice your life for the greater good. Any information could potentially get to the next person and studied. We will never understand the possibility of what could be until someone does it.

Fortune favors the bold. In all of human history, this would be the greatest adventure that we would undertake, and anyone brave enough to go forth would be remembered for all time.

Just making it to mars and surviving on the planet would be glorious. Making it back to earth would be epically glorious!
The way Elon said it, you feel his desire for it to happen

I've always had low self worth, never seen myself as much and I feel as though those on shackletons voyage and the real people going to Mars will be in the same boat, we wanna do it simply to see if we can not for glory not for monetization, just the promise of a journey away from where we are

I am 34 and still trying to find something I am good at. But I wish that by the time he figures this out, I will have found something that makes me worthy if being one of the chosen few. Fingers crossed

gotta respect how honest he is about it. there is no sugar coating it. that is the harsh reality of the situation and if you are going to cry about it then you have no business being a part of it anyway.

Space travel, good. Asteroid mining, good. Space pollution clearing/collection, good. Sacrificing lives to reach Mars, bad. No glory where nothing can be done and nothing of great value brought back.

We can fix our planet first...that would be REALLY GLORIOUS.

There are so many people with the itch to discover a new world. All those people understand the risk of death in that, and I think the combination of the adrenaline from risking your life and discovering something that we thought was science fiction is the driving force
