Eastern Koel Calling. (Eudynamys orientalis) HD Video Clip 1 / 2

The Eastern Koel ( also known as Pacific Koel ) is locally called a storm bird. This is probably because they become more vocal in stormy weather. They are part of the Cuckoo family and lay their eggs in other 'host species' nest. The Male looks black but in very good light, the feathers have a greenish sheen. The red eye is also prominent. The females are beautifully marked with a barred plumage ( see upcoming video ). Once they have bred, most Koels head back to PNG for the winter. Note. I think this is the bird that I get asked about the most due to their repetitive call. I filmed these in my garden on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Tim siggs. ABVC. This bird Video is part of my channel started in 2015. My ambition is to showcase 500 Australian bird species. I am passionate about Bird Video as it Potentially shows bird behaviour, breeding and often bird song.
I began birdwatching when I was 12 and progressed to bird photography and then to bird Video for the past 15 years.
Originally from the UK, I find birding in Australia exciting and engaging. I have now travelled around Australia twice but mainly film birds in Queensland.
Many of the bird clips are taken from hides or blinds that I construct from bush materials, saving the need to carry a hide to a location.
Knowing bird calls and song is a big part of finding each species and naturally, knowing the habitat requirements helps also.
Enjoy.

I just heard my first Common Koel call for the year here in Qld. It’s a call that always reminds me of hard times, but also that life goes on. I lost my partner 13 years ago to cancer and I remember hearing them every afternoon or early morning when I was at the lowest depth of grief. And I am reminded every year when this time rolls around. I’ve had an affinity for them since. They now not only remind me of her, but also how far life for me has come.

Reminds me of my backyard in India. We have a similar species called Asian Koel having similar call. It is considered to be one of the most melodious birds in India. I call it the summer orchestra by nature.😄 thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful bird! Look at its feathers. Look at its red eyes. This is my favorite bird. People say it always makes a terrible and annoying sound, but I like it.

We’ve had this visitor calling at Port Melbourne in the past two years... I’d never heard him here before. Glad to finally been able to identify. Wonderful!

I love these birds, as they make a noise before storms /rain so you can prepare yourself, if they are in your area.

Hi Tim
I appreciate your film clips, and find them very useful for bird identification.
Often the sounds are so familiar but living in subtropical rainforest means that there is a symphony of bird sounds all the time and your uploads have helped me to match the call with the bird. Thanks for sharing this with us all.

Thankyou for this video we get these Koels in storm season here on mid north coast and I have never seen what they look like. I love their call and find it haunting along with the plover at night. Just love living in the country

It’s lovely hearing the birds early in the morning. At a previous place I lived, I used to hear them every morning in the back garden and around. Now....not at all really.

I come out to my birdbath each morning and it is full of these red berries. Now I know who is dropping them off. What a privilege to have them visit us. Gorgeous.

I wish we had this beautiful Koel bird in the Americas. I can listen to its calling all day long. It's nostalgic for me.

Its eyes are as red as the berries it's eating. I wonder if there's any significance in that.
