This sound is so so nostalgic for me. Back when I lived with my grandparents, in India, I remember waking up to this noise. Especially on rainy days. They may be noisy, but they are my favourite bird ❤️

My mom used to tell me a story on how this bird was crying, calling his/her mom after being rude to her. My mom always tells a story when she sends me to kindergarten in the morning. This was in the late 80s. She rides a bicycle with me on the carrier, up and down the hill. Crossing the rubber plantation, paddy field. Dad would take me home in the afternoon as he is usually on a break from work. Riding his blue vespa. Not like mom, dad rarely tells a story but we surely will hang out at the coffee shop in our small town. Dad would pour teh tarik on a cup plate for me.

I love you mak. I love you abah. 😢

One of my favourite bird calls, so much so, I use it on my phone for incoming messages. I do understand it may be a bit anoying at 1-2 a.m., but it's so beautiful, so crisp. I first heard this call in Sri Lanka and since then in Borneo but only in downtown Kuching, not out in the country side.

My grandmother and mother used to sing a lullaby about this bird, and how it lays its eggs in crows nests to be loved and fed by the momma crow as its own. My sister sings it to my nephews as well. So when I hear to koel, it feels like home. It's called ka-wow in Thai.

In my hometown, some of us named it the "raising-keys bird" 😂 for its gradually step-up singing pitch

This drove me mad in Bali, was bedridden for a week and one of these wouldn't stop. It's pleasant for the first day, but a week later I was sent round the bend by it.
