Industrial Design Job Hunt Strategy: Picking a Specialization with Christopher Negrete, Ep 1

We meet with one of my top industrial design students, Christopher Negrete, to discuss career and job hunt strategies. This episode is all about picking a specialization. It can be very scary to do this. Designers are usually attracted to novelty and variety. But the reality is that you can't be everything to everyone.

Edit by Rohan Bell

John Mauriello has been working professionally as an industrial designer since 2010. He is an Adjunct Professor of industrial design at California College of the Arts.

Specialized or generalized = inhouse or agency = work 8h a day or until you are done = Family or not = make slow progress or rush experience = make allways the same or do every month a new genre = stay in your field or have much more responsobility

and at least: be payed good or get less.. :)

Christopher, you should design mechanical watches. Those are mostly designed and built to last 100+ years.

damn, are they asking now "where do you see yourself in 20-25 years" instead of 5 years? :D World is fast :)
Thank you, John. This is a really cool concept!

Hey John, I got an interesting question for you. When you design a product, till what point are you involved with it? Do you prefer to be there till the final launch and even beyond or just prefer being the ideas guy or anywhere between/beyond these limits?

Super useful video, i'm about to graduate in july and i'm job hunting right now.
I got an offer to do an internship in a well-kown furniture design studio, but it's non-paid. what is your opinion about that? Should i take it for the experience?
