I've always sort of considered this song to be my generation's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a way,
Its got multiple acts, genre switches, from ballad to rock anthem all in one package.

Please never stop doing the breakdowns. It's so interesting to see what makes a song work.

Haven't seen a Roomie video in a while, but this called to my emo heart.

gerard's range has always been one of my favorite things about the band. specifically how he can jump between character voices on a dime, lots of howls and shrieks juxtaposed with small effeminate vocals and the ability to emote soo subtly. I Don't Love You and Mama are my favorite examples of that

Modern pop doesn’t have anything close to the drums in this song. I loved you calling out the drum fills and tempo changes and crescendo because they’re so important to what makes this song great!

I love Gerard’s Freddie inspiration with the microphone posing the how the song just comes together.

It's really nice to see Bob Bryar finally getting his flowers for just how fucking great his drumming was on this song and this whole album. RIP Bob.

The amount of nostalgia and feelings this song makes me feel is really what music is all about to me. Timeless expression of emotion that brings you back to all those years ago and makes you feel it all over again in a new context. My Chemical romance and so many bands like them are really what started my deeper love for music as a kid.

Oh wow, a Roomie video that's not pop?

Refreshing. More of this please! (I know pop is your bread & butter, I get it. Still, keeps it interesting)

I missed this whole era of music so it is great to be able to catch up with such a good song!

I saw them live on this album tour and Gerard Way crushed vocals. Definitely didn't notice him loosing his voice, but idk how far through the tour they were. Awesome live. One of my favorite bands back then and will be forever.

4:58 "It's like a children's song"

It's almost identical to the first four chords of Pachelbels Canon. That's probably why it sounds so familiar.

To say that I was surprised seeing this song on this series is to say nothing at all. But I gotta say that this is probably my favourite video of the series so far. Partly because I love the song and how musically complex it is, but also because I just really enjoyed seeing Joel's fangirling over it.
Hope we get more of Joel's favourites songs from that era

I had goosebumps when the drum hits in the intro..

I always thought the "phantom" part was the father telling his son he wont be around forever thus leaving a phantom (memory of his father) to provide a sense of comfort.

Now Rick Beato’s moved on to interviewing rock stars, it’s nice to see Roomie picking up his ‘What makes this song great’ format. Great job on this breakdown.

This is the type of content I've been searching out for a long while as I've been really pursuing music for myself. Thank you so so much

I always thought Welcome to the Black Parade was the Bohemian Rhapsody of the 00's.

When you mentioned the anthemic feel, it reminded me that this often made me wonder if Gerard (who is part Italian) took some inspiration from the Italian national anthem which also repeats the first verse with very different feels and tempos.

Also the video is so like the future destroyed version of the world in season one of the Umbrella Academy (based of course on Gerard's comic book series).

I want you to know I really appreaciate your work on these song breakdowns! I love them, they have just the right amount of sugar, spice and info. I do believe this is the right direction for your talents and skills! Very well done, Roomie! (been here since daily uploads and SIOR and watched your old vids too - your covers are the best!)
