Kotaro’s mom is more neglectful. We don’t see his dad physically abuse him, but he snaps when he finds out what school his son was in. Hopefully the next season gives more backstory. There’s a reason he lost custody.

it’s mostly a grey area. Confusing for the child because while the parent is abusive or neglectful they also have better memories with them which makes the child excuse the harsh treatment if it occurs. Which you can see kotaro doing on more than one occasion. It’s sad but I think both of kotaros parents weren’t abusive from the start, just reality hitting and life happening and them not knowing how to deal with this. Who knows if they even had a support system.

This scene brings out why it is so difficult for victims of abuse to see their abusers as bad people, I have many loving and kind memory's of my mother but that doesn't take from the fact she was abusive to me and my dad and leaving her was the best thing we ever did. The pleasant memory's will always have a place in my heart which is why it was so confusing when I was younger. But it was the best decision I could have made to leave. Nice memory's are good to have, it helps you see them as human and reminds you not to blame yourself, but you also shouldn't accept the bad things they do because you want to have good moments with them.

To put it in a different perspective, a serial killer could have a family, where he is a very good parent but then go out and slaughter someone else's. Bad people are capable of doing good things. And no person is ever born to be a bad person, but the choices we make, decides what label we give them. Good or bad.

people really out here thinking Kotaro's dad must be ~misunderstood~ and we need "his side of the story";; abusers have moments that seem loving and kind with their victims; it's HEAVILY implied that the father is physically abusive throughout the series -- as seen with Kotaro's desire to become physically strong, him recognizing the signs that Mizuki's being hit by her boyfriend, the fact that he actively hides his location from his dad, and the damn detective even knew Kotaru would be fucked if his dad found out where he lives

it's pretty clear that Kotaros dad is abusive, but moments like this make the abuse Kotaro endured more realistic. Most abusers aren't monstrous or abusive all the time, they have emotions and the capability to be kind just like anyone else. It's the reason why children, and even adults, feel guilty calling their abuser for what they are. They can recall kind and caring things their abusers did for them. It's also the reason why Kotaro cherishes his mom's gloves.

In fact it's common for them to be nice after abuse, then rinse and repeat.

This scene came out of left field because up until then, the series made me believe that the father was this heartless monster and the source of all of Kotaro’s troubles.

I used to think that it was the fathers abuse that caused Kotaro’s mother to leave, but after finishing the series, it’s clear that it was more than that. I believe that his mother suffered from postpartum depression that went unchecked, possibly because the father or anyone else couldn’t see or understand the signs, which caused her to neglect Kotaro. The father being unable to understand the mother’s condition tried his best to keep the family together.

he was there has much as he could for Kotaro but having to deal with a small child’s needs as well as the financial expenses and the mothers falling mental health there would be moments were he would snap. Possibly at first only at the mother for being a failure of a parent. And then eventually at Kotaro once the mother abandons them. Though I believe the fathers neglect could have even possibly been a little earlier than that due to all of the mounting pressure.

I can't wait for season 2, I hope we get more backstory on kotaro's dad and mom, cause it is already said from the start that his dad was abusive, and mom dead. But I'm curious to see if it is true and what drove them to it, because it didn't seem like the dad was abusive from the start and the mom looked more neglectful, but hopefully we can see more of a backstory the next season
