The Small Faces / Faces Explosive 'Stay With Me' Induction Performance

Hall of Fame Inductee Ian McLagan was among the most prominent unifying threads that linked the Small Faces – a band of mod rockers who embraced soul and psychedelia in the 60s – to the Faces, a rollicking band of roots rockers who took the 70s by storm. A wickedly talented musician, McLagan's percussive playing, nuanced accompaniment and versatility behind the keys made him integral to shaping the Small Faces/Faces sound across two decades, and his influence continued long after the Faces disbanded in 1975.

On April 12, 2012, while in Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Ian McLagan was joined on stage by formers Small Faces/Faces bandmates including guitarist Ronnie Wood and drummer Kenny Jones, while Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall stepped up on lead vocals, filling in for the late Steve Marriott and an ill Rod Stewart. The group ripped through three classics from the Small Faces/Faces oeuvre: "All or Nothing," "Ooh La La" and "Stay With Me."

From 1972's "A Nod is as Good as a Wink... to a Blind Horse," the album version of "Stay With Me" erupts in an uptempo intro that gives way to a steady groove marked by Ian McLagan's distorted electric piano part, Ronnie Wood's powerful slide guitar playing, Kenny Jones' deliberate drumming and the late Ronnie Lane's typically deft bass lines. The dirty tone of the group's chief players and Rod Stewart's well-worn vocals give a debauched tale (Yeah, I'll pay your cab fare home / you can even use my best cologne / just don't be here in the morning when I wake up) the grit it needs to be compelling, wrapping it with a lively energy that's unadulterated entertainment.

Watch as decades later, at the 2012 Induction Ceremony, McLagan and his bandmates showcase the brilliant rock and roll bombast that made "Stay With Me" a Top 20 hit and an enduring rock song.

Any rock’n’roll fan who does not have the Small Faces / Faces music in their collection should be ashamed.

I saw Rod Stewart and The Faces live at the Roundhouse in London in May, 1972. Nazareth was also on the bill, along with many other acts! Memorable, night - I will never forget it!

Could you imagine what it would have been like, if Marriott and Lane were still alive, and performing Tin Soldier or Itchykoo Park?
