That’s great Roy! It looks like a purpose designed mid rake in the mast, love your work

Howdy all, quick tip if you're making a mast from a tree. Cut in September (less sap content) and leave in a shed with good airflow until February or March. Don't strip the bark and make sure to cover both ends with cling film. This means the wood has to dry from the core right through to the bark. This helps to stop splitting and warping.

I think you did a very nice job with non-processed wood. Looks like a lot of work and a very satisfying result.
I was surprised to see how much SNOW you still have. In Montreal, it's pretty much all gone. Bfn.

Perhaps treating it with PEG to help prevent checking (like wood turners use when working with green wood) might be a good idea? Not 100% sure however treating the rot with Varathane Wood Hardener to arrest the creep of the rot and make the foot of the mast more solid might be a consideration too.

Hi Roy, Mast is looking dam good. Told you about the telephone pole I made into a mast for my 30 footer. So what boat is this for? Andi/Corpus Christi

There's a reason we boatbuilders make a mast by taking a round tree then making it square before making it octagonal, it removes the sapwood.

It's got character, and I dont think the wind will a mast needs some rake anyway, hey?
