My experience getting scammed on Facebook Marketplace when out shopping for a bargain, PLUS tips and advice on how not to be the victim of fraud/theft!

I am sorry that you lost some money, but you were smart enough to check things out before you lost anymore. It was a capital idea to talk to your sister. Scammers try to isolate people from friends and family so the victim wont get any warnings . In your case it was the sale of a camera. Your video may possibly help warn someone else. Forgive me, but how is Facebook Market supposed to work?

I'd be dubious about paying before getting the item. BUT i'd also be dubious about sending an item before I got payment.
So what is the official or recommended lines?
You could sell with paypal, but can't the buyer request a charge back/cancel and say wrong or broken item was sent?


It's been a long time since I've used FB to sell and it's changed. When I last used it, it was just a local buy and sell page for my area.

You would sell for cash, you would meet up.. they check the item over, if they are happy they hand over the cash.. simple, no worrying over charge backs or scams.

should ALWAYS show the scammers name, and usually if they can't put a sentence together that doesn't sound funny, it's a scam and run away.

I'm guessing your in the U.K, I'm in the U.S. and whenever I buy something to be shipped on Facebook Marketplace I order thru Facebook Marketplace and pay thru Facebook Marketplace so, is it different there? Hopefully the guy was stopped from doing this anymore

This guy was giving you such a hard time, and still, you were hell bent on losing your money to him, weren't you? There were lots of clues even before you sent him the money, the mate, mate, mate business, for instance, and the inconsistencies in his story and communications, etc.

Don't buy anything from these online market places type of things. Just go to a reputable camera store and ask them if they have any used cameras for sale in your price range and liking. Spend the extra few pennies so you don't get scammed.

You know the old saying: if it's too good to be true, it usually is.
