Okinawan Kobudo: Can This Martial Art Survive? #martialarts #karate

The ancient weapons of Okinawa hold an important place in the history of martial arts in Okinawa and Japan, but does it have a future? It’s an important question that can also be asked of other traditional arts, like Naginata or Jukendo (the way of the bayonet). We would like to hear what you think and if any of our viewers actually practice Kobudo or traditional Okinawan weapons.

These are not light weapons. The ability exhibited here is easily underestimated by anyone who has not used Sai. Very nicely done

I'm very grateful my karate school still teaches kobudo on Thursday but only kids show to the class. I'm going to go there more often to appreciate it more OSU

Exquisite technique on display. Okinawan Kobudo and all surviving Koryu at large should be protected and passed on. These are living histories, your motions and intent, your training, all are true continuations of rare art forms that could not have been developed at any other place and moment in history. We should reframe our notion of practicality. Immensely valuable. 🤍

There's reasons why Okinawans live past 100 years of age, this is one of them. Very talented and good people!

Each art was created for a reason every art is Which is why self growth was important because that art you chose would help show improvement within self and reactions to situations! Compared to one strict style! If you your able to admire living art you can see what I mean ! 😊

Kobudo plays an important role in martial art even today, weapons are important for survival, durning a war time situation, you may not have a gun, but if you’ve had weapons training, you can still defend yourself. A weapons expert can use anything as a weapon. Today there are many professional soldiers out there are capable of using knives, axes, machetes, staffs anything they can find. The Karate schools need to keep Kobudo training in their system. In China, weapons play a big role in your training. Many things of the past should not be forgotten.

It must survive. It's our way to reconnect with the past. If our generation can't see any potential to ancient kobudo, maybe the generation next to us can make it work. Anyway, it is just my personal opinion. Thank you.

Like saying kata for the Tonifa sticks are useless. If you can use Tonifa, then you can use the Sai. Then it is useful. Tonifa and Sai, are defensive weapon techniques. They can be very useful!

To my knowledge Japanese police actively use a blunt version of the sai (little longer, think wolverine claws). Excellent knife/sword catcher, with the potential to break the blade

I don’t understand why you would ever do a slashing movement with a those tbh. Or punch with the tips facing you

We have Kobudo at Kyokushin Kan, Kaicho Hatsu Royama's organization. Find it useful and very rich to practice.
