This problem has pained me time and time again. What I suggest (and what I do now) is to not use any external distortion or overdrive pedals. You can use the out on your amp no problem though. I would suggest adding these effects onto the signal inside of logic. Either through a plugin specifically built for distortion or overdrive or from the pedalboard plugin. I find that using the amp designer can boost tone if you are careful with it. All these plugins are very touchy so just play with it.

Ok, thanks for the answer. Gonna try that pedalboard plugin..

Obviously not... a signal from a DI guitar is going to be drastically higher than a dynamic microphone for an example. So much so that the noise floor will be noticeable. Every studio I've been to checks preamplifier levels before recording.

Hey you don't show how you actually turned down the pre amp gain! That microphone symbol pops up but what are you pressing??

what do you do when your mic has a gain knob as well? I have this blue yeti mic... I'm confused when it comes to deciding where the computer's software gain level is compared to the mic's analog gain knob

How did you set your gain setting low in the beginning?

Hi, Mitchel. Could you help me a bit? The setup is as follows: presonus firebox+Logic Express 9+amp DI-out. And a guitar pedal-board..where should I plug it in to have a correct sound of overdrive and distortion pedals? If I put pedalboard into the amp's loop ODs and Dists sound weak. If I don't use amp at all and put pedalboard out -> into Mic/Instr channel 1 of Presonus Firebox and pedalboard in-> into guitar ( guitar has on-board pre-amp) ODs and Dists don't sound good as well =(

Actually you want your preamp leve to be around -6db to have a good recording level.

so how do you de-noise the hum ? a noise gate ?

Hi Michael,
I have a doubt about the gain level for recording. If you use a mic for recording that is directly connected to a macbook, is it possible to amplify the signal without an external mixer? I mean, is there a preamplifier pluggin in logic to amplify my voice without amplifying the noise of the room at the same time? I am using a Shure SM58. Many thanks for your advices!

I never use di for guitar. I aways use High end condenser like rodes and shure for acoustic guitar and guitar amps.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to have them sing like they will when they are recording instead of having them scream into the mic? sorry I'm not trying to criticize I'm trying to learn D:

that depends on environment, source, and instrument... so setting it at a set place doesn't work.

I was just manipulating the preamp gain knob and had it turned low.

dont you have to normalize it before anything ?

No cause 6db is plenty loud to track it will give more head room in mixing. i saw video and it lacking quality. i am professional and no my stuff.
