The Shaper Origin - World's First Handheld CNC Machine

I have a try making my first project with the new Shaper Origin handheld CNC machine in my new wood shop! Still getting it all together...

Technology has existed for a very long time that allowed steel fabricators to draw on sheet plate with a marker and let a flame cutter follow the line with a simple electronic eye. In fact the tech is now so old as to be nearly extinct and replaced by CNC. But it was loved and had a place in low volume and prototype work. Glad to see someone bringing it back.

In the forums, it's been discussed quite a bit about the on off switch. and the guys at Origin said all that you do is unplug it. Only switch is for the spindle. There is a way to delete the scanned work spaces. Check in the Shaper community there are discussions there on how to delete work spaces. On the fiducial markers they have unique non repeating patterns. Someone have created a program to print your own. Just start doing searches in the Shaper community and you will seek the answers to those concerns. I am still waiting on my SO but glad to see you enjoying your new machine.

Kind of amazed this thing exists. For a generalized tool it seems super complicated. Although I suppose that is a good thing for people who are doing really sophisticated projects.

Fran, buy a set of remote control plugs, keep the remote nearby and switch the machine off remotely, simple. I bought a set of four remote controls for around twenty English Pounds and they work fantastically well. Hope this helps, Rob.

Hey Fran! I got one too and so far it's been wonderful. Of course the first thing I started to investigate was if I could use the shaper to make a prototype circuit board.
