Firefighters are preparing for the hottest, driest conditions in Australia since the Black Summer bushfires nearly four years ago.

In Canberra, the nation's first Disaster Preparedness Summit is underway to stress-test plans for the months ahead and to rethink how Australia responds to natural disasters. Here's national regional affairs reporter Jane Norman.

ABC News In-depth takes you deeper on the big stories, with long-form journalism from Four Corners, Foreign Correspondent, Australian Story, Planet America and more, and explainers from ABC News Video Lab.

Hmm that wasn't the Blackhawk, it was the MRH90 where it was under so much criticism.

Politicians need to become Volunteers - if this is the message behind this. To expect People to not be employed for 'on call' 'training' 'deployment' to Extreme Weather Events - any longer, is diminishing the value of those people and Australians. Defence must be deployed in protecting country - as in natural disasters and humanitarian work. To diminish Australians any longer as just 'be resilient' -to major environmental, climate breakdown - as results of big corporations polluting atmospheric and natural processes for Profit, is another 'Morrison moment' of Obfuscation of responsibility? Its gone, beyond the realm of safety and risk assessments.

The COMMUNITY and the Defenseforce do the work….the Government???? How about all the Volunteers? Yes the Community is the Hero, not the politicians…

There average journalist really should do some homework before commenting on military hardware. Not every helicopter in Army colours is a Blackhawk. The helicopter pictured was an MRH90 Taipan. That’s like calling a Camry a Cadillac.

No. Military spend 80% of their time cleaning equipment, training or painting rocks. If Military doesn't help, they may lose their budget

people in threatened areas need to learn from the SES and the Bush fires brigades to help themselves. Ethnic Australia should be encouraged to volunteer
