This is an important video. It translates into every career. I work as a health and wellness contractor for corporate wellness. Worked with a uniform delivery company and remember meeting drivers who had been there for 10-20 years. Great people, very smart, well educated but didn’t want to move into management. They all said they liked what they did. It kept them healthy and in shape, low stress and worked with customers they’ve known for years and were like friends. They made good money and when they were off they were off. No phone calls, emails, any of that nonsense. Their marriages were healthier, as mentioned they were healthier physically, and got to get out in the fresh air all day. Thanks Dave. This video needs 2 million views and thanks to the person who asked the question.

You are making the right call. The truth is, a quality sales person is harder to find than a quality manager. I spent 19 years on the sales floor loving what I did and I enjoyed the long term relationships I formed with my clientele. I'm still great friends with many of them. I still thought I needed to be a manager though. I ended up going to a different Toyota store to run the desk. After 5 years in management I ended up hating the business and my career. Yeah, the money was great but it was pretty good as a career sales person. I left the business completely in 2019. After talking with many other managers, many shared that they regretted the move but wanted to avoid the perception of "failure" by going back to sales. Again, love your content so keep it coming.

Another salesman that stayed a salesman throughout a 40 year career started off with a new Pontiac dealership as a salesman in 1960. He was well known for selling all 6 used cars in inventory on the opening day of the Pontiac dealers first day. Even sold his demo. Had to have his wife come get him from work.

I can tell you are an honest person with an amazing work ethic. The passion you have about your job reminds me of my dad the good old days. When men respected work

I work at Lynn Layton Chevy in Alabama. Love your stuff. Very true and very wise words in this video. I've been in sales for 9 years and have stayed in sales the whole time.

A very honest video. It's truly honorable to approach your work from a service mentality, and to have a healthy appreciation and recognition for how it has created great results for both your customers and you. I hope this channel increases your business and moves you easily toward your financial and career goals.

Now where's that puppy you featured a few days ago?

Heard a great anecdote on this subject from a great van driver for a rental car company. Happened to drop off my vehicle at a busy time so there were lots of people waiting for shuttle back to airport. Vehicle pulls in, unloads its passengers, and driver announces he is going on a break so don’t board his van. Next driver pulls in and is stuck with a growing group of people which packs his vehicle to the gills. By the time I get on the only place I can get any space is as a standee near the driver. We ended up chatting as he was a great driver. He said he was briefly in management after starting out as a driver, but went back to being a driver because he couldn’t stand those who had no work ethic. Apparently the driver’s contract allowed for a break after each run to/from the airport, but it was by no means mandatory. This specific driver felt that when times were busy you only needed it if you absolutely needed to use the facilities or something where it wouldn’t be safe to immediately drive. He said too many were using it to grab a cigarette, gossip with friends, etc. while a coworker was getting killed with a run that likely would have to stop at every terminal of a major international airport. As a driver only he could do what he felt was right without having to seem like the heavy.

So true Dave! A management position may pay more but there is also a price to pay for that role. I’ve worked for the same FI for the last 21 years. The latter 12 years in management. I really miss the days when I was an “employee” and not management. The responsibility load and stress was so much less. When your day was done you left any trouble behind you instead of carrying it all the time. My goal is like you said, to “manage myself”. As soon as my house is paid for I would like to step down out of management and go back to a role where I have the customer interactions and someone else holds the responsibility. 😁 Life is more than money.

Good video, Dave. I enjoy your channel.

We’re very fortunate to have found our own “Dave B” at a CDJR dealership near where we live in central Nebraska. He seems to share a lot of the same philosophy of sales that you talk about. We’ve bought four cars from him so far, eight in total from that particular store, and he’s the first phone call we make whenever we need something. It’s a jungle out there, as you well know, and so when there’s a place to go and not get eaten alive it’s really nice.

Great video as always. I knew a sales person who I purchased 2 cars from and, too, explained the exact reasons why she would not take a sales manager position. She told me it was a 6 day a week and a thankless stressful job. You are doing what you want and that is important to you.

As a general manager my advise is always, excel in what you are doing learn everything about the operations and would be heavy resume. When you excel people notice.
